How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I wish to self reliant in terms of food productivity. Without enough food no one can do much of the development since one has to eat well first.I have prepared the land well and I intend to use fertilizer to boost on the productivity of food crops such as maize and beans. In the past I have not been using fertilizers but going forward I intend to use it to maximize on the productivity and be food secure.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly operations have been planned so well and their services notable is on Mpesa security. There are so many scammers in our place and they usually steal from people. I had used a simple mpesa pin that is the year of birth and I didn't know that it presented a risk. They guided me on how to change and my money was secure. That is the part I liked most even for my knowledge and security. I am now more enlightened than before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was struggling a lot and was faced with a myriad of challenges. When I received the transfers I felt so relieved and had the peace of mind that had long eluded me. I was able to buy a calf worth KES 22000 that is about to calf. It gives me joy and I wanted it for posterity. I also had some loans that I had defaulted since I had no means to pay as life was so biting, so I was able to settle it down and I am so happy now.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was very early in the morning when one of my children came visiting. I could see the excitement in his face and true to my thinking he informed me that he had received his transfer as earlier promised. I told him to check whether I had received mine too and upon checking he informed me that I too had received my share. We were so happy as a family and after careful considerations I decided to forego my house improvement plans and instead buy livestock with the money
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the dairy cow that I bought. I had sold all my livestock to pay school fees and was looking forward to the day I will be able to accumulate enough money to buy one. I would rely on proceeds from dairy which would just be enough to feed my family. I am so grateful that finally my life and that of my family have been improved through this transfer and the one child that is under my care will finally have a better living standard too.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 40000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to buy furniture and other basic household needs such as food. I had had to sell all the livestock that I had to help pay school fees for my children who were in various secondary schools and I thought it was about time that I reclaimed that which was lost. I am so happy and grateful that GiveDirectly enabled me realize this. With my old age,I could hardly do any casual work or farming that would allow me accumulate such huge amounts of money to be able to buy the dairy cow. I am looking forward to having my life improve.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Acquiring a dairy cow has been a wish that I have had for years since I sold all the cows that I had to pay for my children's education. This has forced us to buy milk daily from vendors at a daily cost of KES 50 which is very costly since I do not have any source of income that enables me to buy milk daily. Receiving this money will be a relief to me since I will be able to buy a dairy cow that will supply my family with milk and cut the cost. It will enable me to also sell the milk and earn some money for buying food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the last 6 months, my family has not lacked food thanks to the good harvest of maize that we had last year because of the constant rainfall that we received and this has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The unavailable source of income is the major challenge that I am currently facing. I rely on our children for money for buying food so much that I feel I am putting pressure on them. Having no money also impacts the many things that I have wanted to achieve such as completing my house.
