How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goal was to educate my child to a level that I could. I have been trying and struggling as much as I could to look for money to educate my last born child, but it had never been that easy because I could only manage to get a little income from my business. Therefore, the transfers played great in terms of paying school fees for my child. I also wanted to build a better house because the one that I am currently living in is in a dilapidated state, therefore boosting my business with the transfers would help increase the income that would later help with construction.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing a great job in terms of providing financial to the less fortunate in the society like myself. I was previously stuck financially and had nowhere to get help from, but GiveDirectly came to my rescue and finally, I could afford a smile and I pray that the program should continue and also reach other people as well. Everything is done to perfection and there is nothing to improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfers had been so far of great help to me. At my current age, I feel that could no longer engage in other duties like walking for long distances in search of water, therefore I wanted to install tap water in my home so that I do not struggle much since I also do not have someone to help me out with the duties. Therefore, with the transfers that I received, I spent part of my first transfer and $77 of my second transfer on water installation, and currently, I feel so happy. My last-born child is currently in his final year at the university, and getting money to pay for his school fees had always been quite a challenge, but with GiveDireclty coming into my life, I managed to clear his pending balance of $200. The remaining transfer was also of great help in terms of adding more stock to my fish-selling business where I spent $123 and saved $150 for my future needs. This was a God-sent program and I was very grateful for being one of the beneficiaries.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
No sooner had I finished preparing lunch at around 1 pm than a message popped into my phone. Since I do not know how to read and my helper was not around, I went to a neighbor whom I trust to check the message for me. I took this initiative because the promised day of receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly was nearer. Upon checking the message, she told me that I had received the promised transfer of $550 from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy for receiving a huge sum of money that was not a loan.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am very grateful for the support I received from GiveDirectly. What stood out was paying the fee balance of my university son. In addition to that, being able to revive my business which had collapsed for more than four months was a great achievement. As of now, the business is doing well and it generates income for my family for sustenance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I am remaining with one child who is in university, my priority was catering to his education. Therefore, when I withdrew the money, I spent $250 to clear his university fees for the year. Clearing the fee balance means concentration and focus on his academics since he would not be bothered by fees. This also gave me peace of mind to work on other things. As of now, I am happy because he is settled in school and conducting his studies peacefully. Apart from the school fees, I opted to use $250 to apply for fresh water and I bought all the required equipment for the fittings. I did this because, at the age of 73 years, it is hectic for me to carry a bucket of water from distant water points to my home. Thereafter, I used the remaining $40 to revive my grocery business which had collapsed. As of now, the business is doing well and I am grateful for the aid I received from you.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My grandson's education is my number one priority, he is a third-year student at Kenyatta University and I am so proud of the far he has come. I owe the school $250 and I want him to complete his studies seamlessly. The moment I receive this money, I will pay the school and what is left I will use to boost my fish business. If there is one thing I fear in this life is suffering. I want to be in a position I can afford to feed myself and meet other basic needs, this is my one desire
What is the happiest part of your day?
I enjoy listening to the radio, I enjoy hearing the news, and listening to good gospel music after coming home from working so hard to earn a living. Radio Maisha is one of my favorite radio stations if find it entertaining and I always look forward to listening to it every night.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My business is not doing well at the moment. The last profit I made from the fish business I used to pay school fees for my grandson who is in university. Now I can only manage to buy a stock of $8 which cannot afford me meals in a day. I survive on a cup of tea and a meal at night, which is sad.
