How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have a new goal for now since I am working on the ones that I am about to accomplish, one being rearing dairy cows. I believe that these cows will bring a very big impact on my life in the next few months. This is because as soon as they will start producing milk, I will be able to sell the milk and earn a living hence I won't struggle in fending for my family. It will also be a relief to my spouse who has been the breadwinner for all those years.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been of great help to my entire community. Ever since they came into our lives, there is a positive impact on the lives of the individuals they visited. We now own assets like houses, livestock, and pieces of land among others. Also, all our children are now in school which makes us so hopeful that their future will be greener. village. Therefore, I do not see anything GiveDirectly needs to change, all went well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying two dairy cows which cost $290. I settled for the cow since they have so many benefits as compared to the other domestic animals. I am therefore positive that the cows will start producing milk in large quantities very soon. My family will enjoy taking white tea every morning which has been their desire. Apart from my family's consumption, I will be selling the remaining litres to the local dairy shop. I will therefore be earning an income which will empower me enough to fulfil my family's basic needs without struggling like before. To add to that, I paid fees for my four children who are in primary school. They are now studying comfortably without being bothered by the issue of fees. They now feel motivated and I am certain that they will produce very good results in the forthcoming exams. With the remaining amount of money, I had to buy siffiecnt food for my family which is comprised of seven members. We are grateful that we no longer borrow or go without food like before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 pm when I was at home lying in bed feeling unwell when a message popped into my phone. I stretched my hand to pick up the phone from the edge of the bed so that I could check what the information was. Money gives strength to the weak, when I checked and found it was the promised transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly, I gained some strength and managed to sit on the bed. This strength was brought by the happiness that felt after getting the good news of receiving the first transfer, something that I was yearning for. I slowly managed to walk out and moved around the home compound as if I was taking some walking exercises but I was celebrating inwardly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since I was stuck to complete the roofing of my house, I am grateful that GiveDirectly enabled me to complete it through the first transfer. The difference that came as a result of completing the house is that my respect is guarded and my private life is also out of my children's reach. This is because they have their own house thus enabling me to do my things freely under no interference. I am also grateful because, through the transfer, I was able to buy enough food for my family hence food security was put in place. Initially, getting some food was a big challenge. I had to fight tooth and nail making and selling charcoals for my family to eat but I am glad that I am resting from the tiring work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing was to settle school fee balances and arrears for my four lower primary children who were regularly sent home for the same. Therefore, I paid KES 2700.00 to their school. Thereafter, I opted to complete the roofing of my second house which I had already started constructing. I bought 13 pieces of iron sheets for KES 12400.00, some roofing timbers for KES 1600.00, and a labor charge of KES 2500.00. The aim of building the second house is because the one I had was too small to accommodate my family thus opted to build another one so that the children could have their own house. By so doing I would retain my respect and guard my privacy as a parent. I also bought three goats for KES 9000.00 intending to keep them to procreate and once they increase in number I would be selling them for profit. Besides buying a bed and mattress for KES 9500.00 because I used to sleep on boxes on the floor and I desired something better, I also bought two sacks of maize for food. This is because our area was faced with drought and we were unable to harvest anything from our farms. For the remaining amount, I opted to save it for family use.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It has been a very big desire to make sure all my children are well educated despite the fact that I never stepped in a classroom. Education is very important, that is something I have come to learn. This desire has been challenged due to the lack of school fees. When I heard GiveDirectly is coming I new my dreams have been answered. This means even if I will have to spent all my transfer to educate my children, as a parent I will be contented and relieved a lot of burden.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It is evident that we have problems as a family but sometimes things happen in our favor and in the mercy of God. Last week my husband came home with a sack(90kg) of maize, something that will for sure sustain us for a whole month hopefully. This is very big relief because my children will have something to eat and smile about.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
What has been the most challenging and traumatizing thing in my household basically is food and school fees. I have four children and the only source of income we solely depend on is just 300KES a day from a casual job my husband has. As we speak here, all my children were sent home yesterday to collect school fees balance of the last term. This situation is stressing and disturbing considering the fact that the children are very willing to get education but we have no money to sustainably keep them there.
