How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After achieving some of my dream with the transfers, I do not have any other new goals. the only goal is to boost the shop business that I started with the transfer because it is yet to stabilize. Improving it will result in earning more profit that I would support the family as well as saving to start other projects. Accomplishing this will transform our living standards for the better.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in helping the poor household in our community with a cash transfer program. In addition, it was unconditional giving the right for the individual household to decide based on their preferences to better their living conditions. Through the transfers, our lives have improved greatly in the village something that we are grateful to achieve. With all this, there is nothing that the organization did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Owning a shop business has always been my dream for many years. After receiving my first transfer, I rented a place intending to start the business using the second one. I invested KES 25,000 to acquire the different stocks for the shop. Currently, I am happy being economically active and assisting my husband in bringing up our family of 4 members. Previously, I was a housewife depending on my spouse for almost every need of the family. Nowadays, I am earning a profit of KES 500 daily on average which can comfortably assist in meeting small basic needs like food. Being able to relieve my husband of the burden of supporting all the needs. Moreover, I spent KES 20,000 to purchase one local dairy cow a future investment for the children. The intention is to save the income from the selling of milk to educate my 2 children once it reproduces.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to fetch firewood that evening and the place did not have enough network coverage. I could not readily receive a message. When I finally returned home, I heard my neighbours saying that GiveDirectly had sent the first transfer. I checked my phone and to my surprise, I had also received mine. I was greatly overjoyed and broke the news to my husband who joined me in celebrating this blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After completing my primary education, my parents were unable to take me through high school due to financial constraints. I had to make my way out and to fend for myself. I joined a vocational training college and earned a certificate in tailoring. I could only work for others though my dream was to start my own tailoring shop. I am happy that through the transfer, I managed to spend Ksh.35000 and rented a premise and purchased some textile materials to start with. I believe through this business, I will be able to assist my husband in taking care of the families financial needs like fees for the children and food. I am planning to buy more textile materials to stock using the second transfer to keep my business running.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been planning to start a small business with my husband which could serve as a source of income for us. However, we could not gather enough capital to facilitate this. He was previously working in a car wash until it was relocated due to an ongoing road expansion. This rendered him jobless and he was the breadwinner of the family. When I received the transfer, I took Ksh. 35000 and rented a premise where I can open a shop. I am also a trained tailor and I am planning to put my skills to practice by purchasing textile materials. I believe through this shop, I will be able to generate a good income that can take care of our basic needs. In addition to this, I also spent Ksh. 10000 to purchase a new bed and mattress and replaced the old beddings that I have been using for years. Lastly, I spent the remaining amount on buying four goats which I am currently keeping on my homestead. These are assets which I can rely on to settle my financial needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a tailor by profession and I am employed in a tailoring shop in my nearby town. My husband is a motorcycle operator Carry bugs of charcoal from my home town to another town for a pay. We are living a very difficult life. The household revenues isnt enough to cater for all our domestic needs plus having little savings to allow me buy my own sewing machine. Receiving this money will mark the start of having my own tailoring shop . I will buy two sewing machines, open a tailoring shop and hiring an extra tailor to maximize my productivity hence make more money. I am excellent in designing many fashions for ladies wear and I believe I will flourish in life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband went to another town on his daily business and when was coming back last month, he managed to get an extra job which he got more money and bought a stock of food for the house. What brought joy and happiness to me is that I have 10kilogrms of rice and 5 kilograms of beans in my house- food which will sustain me for 2 Weeks.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the biggest challenge in my house. Sometimes I run out of money to buy food especially if my husband is away for some days without sending someone to me. I have a baby of one and a half years old who needs food and the wages I get from my job is KES 230 per day of which doesn't sustain the babies needs. We do not have water in our area and we have to buy from far place- 2kilometres from my compound. I have many challenges which are all brought by luck of stable income generating activity but if I open my own tailoring shop. I believe all these problems will be a gone case.
