How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Because I currently have a house in improved condition, I will be at liberty to focus on one thing for the next year. Having bought a lactating cow has created a desire in my heart to work towards keeping more livestock. Therefore for the following year, my main goal is to buy and keep additional goats and domestic fowl. It is an achievable goal that I have put my focus on. It will help me have an extra source of income and increase my asset value. As a result, supporting my two-member family will become easy.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gives support through unconditional cash transfers. This is the best approach for effective poverty eradication from poverty-stricken communities. In addition, cash transfer is helpful to the elderly since they have the least energy and cannot engage in vigorous economic activities. Since I am advanced in age and I cannot engage in some work, without the transfer, life would be so unbearable. I have built a new house, and life is currently better courtesy of the transfer. However, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since we are advanced in age, we live the two of us, my wife and I. When I received my transfer, I spent $300 on a lactating cow. From it, I always get milk for my household consumption. A situation that has saved me from the burden of buying milk. Since I had initiated a process of innovating my house, I used $100 to renovate it. I am so pleased that my house at the moment is in a better condition. Lastly, I bought food for my family, and we are strong because we have an improved nutritional value.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving this money meant so much to me. I had no source of income, I had searched from door to door looking for a job but nothing good was forthcoming. I received the money when I was almost giving up in life, I had so many needs yet I was straining financially. I celebrated and had to inform all my neighbours who were enrolled in the program to check their mpesa notifications.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my young family have been feeding on regular and balanced diet for several weeks. Since I had no source of income, before the transfers , my family could only take one meal a day, and this made my young family to be in and out of the hospital due to poor dieting.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the transfers to buy two cows worth Kshs 30,000.This is for remembrance of Give Directly transfers, should they give birth in the future, I will be using the milk produced , for my family's consumption and for sale when in excess. I used Kshs 20,000 to build a structure for rearing chicken and to add more chicks. I am a farmer, and rearing of chicken is advantageous as I will be delivering some of them to the hotels for sale, so as to cater for some of my family's needs. I used the balance of Kshs 5,000 to buy food for my family. I thank Give Directly for the transfers as my family have been feeding on regular and balanced diet for several weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My family's welfare is my current priority. Imagine staying in a house that leaks. My grass thatched roof is very old. My wife and I are always susceptible to diseases during the rainy seasons. Working as a palm wine tapper, I do not make enough money to enable my house's renovation. In a good month, I make 2,500 KES. I use this entire amount to buy food. The plan is to use 25,000 KES to renovate the house, erect a new roof made of iron sheets. Our wellness will be guaranteed under a safe house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son started supporting me a month ago. This was after he realized I am struggling to provide for myself and my wife. He assists me with 6 kilograms of maize flour after every 2 weeks. This has been my source of joy because I am no longer struggling, given that I earn very little from my occupation.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the greatest challenge I face. I stay with my wife in this household. I am a palm wine tapper but at 72 years of age, I cannot be productive. I only tap four trees on the maximum. This has lowered my income, leaving me struggling to buy food. 2,000 KES cannot sustain my family for more than a month.
