How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We have a goal of buying more land. We would like to buy more land to add to the one that we have right now because we want more space for growing our crops. The growing of the crops will be of great benefit to us in the future in terms of food and payment of school fees for our two children who are still young. This is because we will sell most of the farm products and use the money from the sales on paying school fees for them. We were able to start a business of buying trees and sawing timber for sale with part of the second transfer. We were also able to buy a cow with the first transfer. The cow is going to reproduce and multiply, and we plan to sell some of the offsprings in future. The money that we will get from the sale of the offsprings plus the ones that we are saving from the business, is what we plan to use in buying more land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDitectly did well because it changed the lives of many people in the community. The people were able to make many developments such as constructing new houses, buying cows, and even paying for their children's school fees. As for me, they enabled me to achieve my dream of starting my business. I hence no longer depend on being employed to earn a living.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of our second transfer on starting up the business of buying trees and cutting them down for timber. We invested KES 20000 on it. We decided to start the business because my husband was no longer employed and also because we wanted something that was going to help us in the future. My husband used to work as a watchman in Nairobi and he used to be paid very little money. Most of the money that he was making used to go to the purchase of food for the family. There was hence none that was left for saving to start up a business. With having set up the business, we have been able to see the benefit of it because my husband is making much more money than when he was employed. We have started saving some money from it and we plan to use the savings on making other developments such as buying land and paying school fees for our two children. We were not able to start the business before because we didn't have the money to do so. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly for offering to help us hence uplifting our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember vividly like yesterday that it was around 9am. When I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I was busy doing my morning chores, I didn't expected any messages from anyone. So I reluctantly check it out. I couldn't believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I was so overwhelmed with joy. I stopped whatever I was doing and rushed to inform my family members. They all celebrated with joy. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. I have never received such amount of money before in my entire life. I am so happy because GiveDirectly enabled me to own a dairy cow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought two heifers. I always buy milk from my neighbors and it's so costly for me. I spent KES 60 per day. It's so costly because I do not have a continuous source of income. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. My spouse do casual jobs in the village and sometimes to get this jobs is really hard. Whenever he gets one the payment is so small as cannot meet all the basic household items. I had always wished to buy a dairy cow but there was no money. Currently we are so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled us live to own one. We have hope that when they reproduced in future we will have enough milk for my family. We will even sell some to earn some money to meet other needs .We are so grateful because were it not GiveDirectly this could not have happened.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 28,00 to purchased two heifers. I will get enough milk when they reproduced in the next few months. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I bought sofa set seats, utensils, clothes and the rest of the money I bought food for the family. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy a cow. I started my own family about 5 years , yet I don't have a cow. I get milk for household use from my father in-laws cows . Sharing the 3 litres that he gets is not always enough. I rely on my husband to provide for us who works as a security guard. His income can not raise enough to buy a dairy cow. I will use part of the money from GiveDirectly to buy two dairy cows. They will produce milk for my family as well as for sale in order to get some cash for buying foodstuffs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is because when I am energetic and most active in doing farm work. Since farming is an investment, it makes me happy to do something that will later benefit my family's welfare. It's very nice to have the energy to work for the betterment of the household.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship in my life is getting enough food for my family. My husband is the door provider. I have always wished to also contribute to his efforts. If I get a dairy cow, selling milk will enable me to buy other household items as we wait for his salary. This will ease his burden.
