Having a dairy cow is the biggest achievement I have acquired so far. I have been buying milk from my neighbors but now I am assured of getting milk for free. This will be a surplus for my daily meal and I believe I will become healthier. Apart from that, I am planning to sell a few liters that will earn me a lot of money since milk is scarce in this area. This will enable me to meet my family basic needs without any difficulties.

In my opinion, GiveDirectly has made a great impact in this village. This is evident since most of the people now own permanent iron-roofed houses. Previously most houses were small grass-thatched huts. Apart from that, no one owned livestock, but almost every household have quite a number. Our children are now studying comfortably unlike before when some were forced to drop out of school because their parents could not pay school fees. In my opinion, Give Directly has done nothing wrong. They have instead improved our living standards and we thank them for that.

I spent part of my second transfer on buying a dairy cow and an ox at 38000. This has been my long time dream because I have a big farm that is idle since I can't plough the whole of it on my own. I can also not afford to hire labor to cultivate it since I am a casual laborer. I, therefore, felt it was important to buy the oxen so that they will help me in farming. Since I have a cow and oxen, they will be able to reproduce and very soon they will fill my cow shed. I later bought clothes for my children at KES 1000. Their clothes were old and torn. I spent the remaining amount on buying foodstuff that would last my family for a whole month.

The transfer has enabled me to buy two cows, for previously I had none. Through them, I will be getting milk for my family and I will no longer be buying which is expensive for me. This is the biggest difference so far in my daily life since I am now able to save some money which I would otherwise use in buying milk.

I had gone to fetch water that morning and I had left my phone in my house. A friend passing by asked whether I had received a message notification from GiveDirectly. That alone reminded me that that was the day we were supposed to receive our transfers. I hurriedly went for my phone and on checking my inbox, I could not hold back the joy and happiness that I felt at that moment. I was thankful to GiveDirectly for financial support.

I will also be benefitting from milk that will be produced and sell to earn an income. Secondly, I bought a new mattress and bed to sleep. I was sleeping on an old traditional bed and my beddings were old and worn out so I had to replace them so as to enjoy a comfortable sleep. I spent the rest of what remained to do shopping on food and other basic needs for my family.
