How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Farming has always been a routine in our family since we have grown up depending on it not only as a source of foodstuff but also income that would always sort some if not all the household bills. The first and the second transfer that I received would not miss a spot in livestock and subsistence farming. I thank God that I managed to accomplish all the plans I had enlisted before receiving the transfer and currently I am still carrying on with some farming practices that keep the family going. I don't have a new goal at the moment apart from keeping an eye on the current farming projects that I established using the first and the second transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The freedom to choose how to spend the money we received from GiveDirectly was the best as every household in the village had varied needs that they ought to have handled their way. I am grateful for this well-thought idea that favored every person who received the money. No one complained then and even at the moment, we are still thankful for everything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my family of 8, our schedules and activities to run in our daily routine have been so packed that we sometimes wonder whether we would ever clear them up and sit to enjoy the fruits. The most pressing task that I have always struggled with is the raising of school fees for my six children especially the elder three who are currently in secondary and college. I thank God that GiveDirectly came into our rescue as I deposited KES 30000 of my second transfer directly to the school accounts. I don't regret this decision since I have been enjoying peace of mind right after, to date, and able to work on other income-generating projects without having to take the outcome to school but to the family saving account. I also spent a fair share on improving the grazing pattern of my livestock by purchasing fencing poles, barbed wire, and enough nails at KES 11000, then later paid KES 1000 labor charges after the subdivision of the grazing fields. I spent the remaining amount on obtaining new pairs of clothing and enough foodstuff for my family of 8 that we are still using to date.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 am as I was going on with my daily activities when I received a message notification on my phone. I was overwhelmed with joy upon reading it as it was a Mpesa message indicating that I had received a lump sum amount of money from GiveDirectly. I informed my spouse and children and they were equally excited on hearing the good news. This money gave us hope that our daughter would finally join college without much struggle.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer came as a relief in my life because I was able to pay school fees for my daughter who was joining college. Having two children in secondary school, one in the university and one who was to join college was weighing me down financially as I am the breadwinner to my family since my husband is old and cannot engage in any strenuous activities. GiveDirectly has lifted our lives tremendously and we are grateful for the support we got that was timely and of great impact on our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My children's education has always been my priority and I have been denying myself the luxury of so many things like buying new clothes so that I can be able to pay their school fees. Recently, I was so much stressed about where to get money to use in paying school fees for my daughter who was to join college since I had spent what I had to pay school fees for her two siblings in secondary school. I am happy and grateful to GiveDirectly for their financial aid since on receiving my transfer, I spent KES 40000 to pay for her college fee and spent KES 6000 to purchase two goats as a way of investing this money. Using the remaining KES 8700, I spent KES 2500 on farming by hiring a tractor to till my land and in buying some hybrid seeds and used the remaining amount on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are subsistence farmers, why do I say so? Because the amount of produce that we get cannot even sustain my family and pay my children school fees. With this transfer, I will be able to pay Ksh 40,000 for my daughter who is joining college and ksh 15,000 for one in secondary school. We intend to buy a cow to add to our herd tlin order to boost milk production.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening because that's the time I have fed my family and also seen my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I can say the biggest hardship that I have faced with my family is financial constraints. We depend on farming in order to take care of our needs and also pay school fees for my children. Sometimes this is not enough and my children are often sent back home for fees. This often troubles me so much.
