How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Previously , I used to plait people's hair from my house , thanks to Give Directly , I opened a salon shop . My goal is to expand my salon business into something bigger . I want to buy all hair dressing equipment and relocate to a better place where there is high demand . My salon will be fully stocked with all types of high quality hair . I'll need about $1000 to accomplish this . I know God will open a way because the profits I get from my current salon business will not be able to achieve this . I'm sure this business will help me to pay school fees for my siblings with ease . I just want to be financially independent in life .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The best thing that Give Directly has done is to uplift people's lives . You have transformed this village ; people never slept on presentable beddings now own new mattresses . Personally , I never knew that I would own a salon shop some day , but look at me now ! Children who had dropped out of school due to school fees balances have now been taken back to school using Give Directly's money . You are already doing the best , there is no area of improvement for you .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The day I received this second transfer , I was so happy ! It was in the morning and I was in my small farm digging . Honestly , I had not expected that the second transfer would be send that soon. I was overwhelmed with joy because two of my siblings had stayed at home for a long time without attending school due to school fees balances . Since they joined form one , I had not paid a lot of money for their school fees . So I took $400 and gave them $200 each for their school fees . I fully stocked my salon with braids , a blow drier and a mirror , this did cost $70 . I'm glad that right now my salon business is picking up and I know it will be profitable since we are approaching the festive season . I also spent $35 on one goat , I hope that it shall reproduce in the near future . Finally , I spent $20 on food .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the evening and I had just gotten back home from work when I received the text message confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I had things I wanted and it helped me a great deal. These things that I had desired to get include livestock and some equipments for my salon business. The latter being a hairdresser personally, was my priority because I run a salon business but was not raising enough money to enable me to meet my family's daily immediate needs as well as get these equipments whose services, a majority of my clients used to need. Therefore, I was so happy when I received the transfer because it was an answer to all the questions I could not find answers to.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I was able to settle my siblings' school fees which used to give me sleepless nights because they were constantly harassed by the school administration due to accumulated school fees arrears. I was also able to get the equipment that my salon business lacked before which I couldn't afford to buy with the little income my business raised, which limited the services I was offering. This consequently made me lose some clients as the services they were asking for were not available at that particular moment, and it used to make me so sad and unhappy. However, with the coming of GiveDirectly to our village and getting me to be enrolled in the program, I was able to get the equipment and I now have them which puts me in a position to attract more clients. I am so happy and grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 30000 on buying some equipment for my salon business because they are a long term investment since it is not something that can be consumed and be finished. This is also an expansion of my business because the equipment I bought offer more services and definitely more income. I couldn't afford to have this addressed because my job as a hairdresser as well as my salon business barely raised enough money which mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs. Therefore, I feel so good right now because there are more benefits with the equipment I bought and the more services I now offer which are long term and will live on to the future. It is my reliable and regular source of income, and through it, I'll always be able to meet my family's daily immediate needs especially food, as well as give a helping hand to my younger siblings in paying for their school fees. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a single parent of one child and it has been a challenge affording our basic needs such as food and clothing. This is brought about by the little earnings from the minery. I was lucky to study beautician course and I have the necessary skills to start a saloon business. It has been my dream for a longtime but due to lack of enough finances, I have not been able to fulfill. Recently, I bought blow-dryer and hair drier machine. A few equipments and supplies pending to start. I need a total of KSH 50,000 to afford all supplies and pay the shop rent. This money will mean an opportunity to make my dreams come true.
What is the happiest part of your day?
A friend of mine is a local teacher in the nearby school. She is on maternity leave and recommended me for the job. Teaching this 2nd grade pupils gives me joy because they show me love, respect and appreciation. This job gives me purpose. Too bad three months are almost over and my friend is almost back. I hope I get enrolled in the program and start the saloon business. I dread going back to the minery for long distances and poor pay.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having unreliable jobs in the minery makes my life hard. The pay is low of 400KES daily which is not enough to afford us regular meals, water and clothing. Our compound supply of water was disconnected due to arrears owned of 6,000 KES. This has resulted us to walk long distances to fetch water. Whenever, I get from tiring work from the minery and on top of that I have to walk long distances to fetch water,. It's exhausting and could affect my health.
