How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a continuing goal. After utilizing the second transfer, I did not complete my aim thus aiming to accomplish it once I get some money. My main goal was to renovate my poor-looking house as well adding a second room since it was too small to accommodate my family of seven. I tried to renovate it but could not complete the renovation as per my plans. From the little savings, I make from my business of making and selling charcoals, I am optimistic about managing to complete the renovation plus the addition of the second room to have a spacious house for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is a life-changing organization. I am a testimony to this. Before the organization came into my life, I used to struggle a lot not only with my children's education but also with the family's basic needs. There was no food, no fees, and poor bedding. We used to sleep hungry for up to two days a week but since the time GiveDirectly gifted me with the transfers, I was able to settle the hardships and we are now doing well as a family. Using the 1st transfer, I managed to get some good bedding. Currently, we sleep well and we are happy for GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
School fees for my six children have been a challenge for me to provide. Upon getting the transfer, I used $200 to settle the school fee issue which was frustrating me. The hardest part is when my children were sent out of school for fees. Currently, the children are very happy since they went back to school and they are undertaking their studies well. This gives me peace of mind since their happiness is my joy. I also used $36 to buy some school uniforms for them because their shirts and blouses were torn. For the remaining amount, I opted to save it for the family's upkeep since getting food was another big challenge. We used to go without meals for at least two days a week. As of now, we have some food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm while I was on my way from a burial when I received a message on my phone. I just ignored the message since I do not know how to read, till I reached home. No sooner had I reached home than I asked one of my children to confirm from my phone what kind of a message it was before I delete it without knowing. The information I got after the confirmation was heart-giving and uplifting. This was the first transfer from GiveDirectly that I had received. I felt so happy and overwhelmed for receiving a huge amount of money at once knowing that the things that were challenging me because of money were going to be accomplished.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, my lifestyle was pathetic and shameful and I lacked confidence, especially at a time when I receive visitors. At first, I had no chairs to offer them, and secondly no bed nor a mattress for them to sleep on, it was a shame on my end. This kind of life did not give me peace of mind but thank you to GiveDirectly who came to fulfill what I desired in my life. As of now, I managed to buy chairs and mattresses as well as a study table for my children to conduct their studies. Through the organization, I am confident and ready to receive any visitor not as before when I was afraid of them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a mother of six children has been a big challenge to me in catering to their basic needs more so shelter. My children had been sleeping on the floor on sacks and unused clothes for a while for I did not have money to buy some bedding for them. When I withdrew the money, I bought four mattresses for KES 18800.00; three for my children and one for me. I did this so that they could also have comfortable nights when they sleep. I also bought six chairs for KES 4200.00 since I did not have even a single chair at my home. It was shameful to get a visitor and offer them a bucket to sit on. Even the GiveDirectly staff who came sat on a bucket, something that did not give me peace of mind. Since my children had been conducting their studies on the floor, I saw it prudent to buy them a study table so that they could comfortably conduct their studies while seated on the chairs. Concerning that, I bought one table for KES 2000.00. Thereafter I bought some poles for KES 4000.00 to renovate my house by adding another room since it was small and congested for us. Having done that, I paid KES 2000.00 school fees for my primary school children and used the remaining amount in buying some food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do not have chairs in my compound, I use water jars as chairs. I intend to buy chairs for the comfort of my visitors and my family of seven. We sleep on sacks on the floor without proper blankets, this has made our health deteriorate. I will buy beds and mattresses so that my children can sleep comfortably. With the remaining amount, I will renovate my house with concrete pillars to make it stand firm to prevailing winds and rain.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last six months staying healthy with my family of seven children has always brought joy to my life. I thank God for good health and not being able to tell the last time we visited a hospital.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not having a stable source of income has always been the challenge to me. My husband works as a casual laborer at a construction site that is seasonal. Mostly he comes home empty-handed and we have seven children in school to pay school fees and feed. It has always been hard to maintain such a family. We have to eat two meals per day which have made our health to be unwanting.
