How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After visiting a commercial poultry farm in the nearby town, I was deeply motivated to think of venturing into the same business but on small scale for the start. At the moment, this is a new goal that I am looking forward to, and hoping that I will soon be able to raise enough capital towards the same. In my view, it is an easy project to run and a good source of income that will not take a long time before giving back the returns.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the project was effective to the needs of every household since we got the opportunity to plan and address any challenge we had. The sensitization that was done in the initial stages was crucial too and it played a great role in making everyone know that it was individual responsibility to change their living standards with the same amount that everyone received. This motivated everyone to work hard as we felt it will be a great shame to exhaust the transfer without any difference in our lives. Everything done by GiveDirectly met all the expectations we had and I can not complain at all.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The second transfer came in when I had set all things right after spending the first transfer on all the needs that I felt were urgent in my household. This second transfer was hugely invested in livestock, in that, I bought two heifers at a total cost of KES 34000 to add to the other dairy cows I already had in my field. I had been very dependent on the sale of milk that has always sustained my family and an addition of two will soon increase the production, thus household income. I also brought three sheep at KES 15000 that I am looking forward to breeding and selling out in the future whenever there is a need. I spent the remaining amount on foodstuff and clothing for my family of six.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember well that it was 9am, when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I didn't bother much to check it. At that very moment I heard my neighbor celebrating, I overheard them saying it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. Then I remember getting the message, When I checked my phone I couldn't hide the job. It was message that indicate that I have received 550 dollars from GiveDirectly. I inform my family members and they also really celebrate. We immediately align on how to spent the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer and a oxen. I do casual jobs at the construction sites. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I do not have a continuous source of income to enable me buy the livestock. The amount of money that I get from the casual jobs is for school fees and food. When I received the transfer I felt so happy and overwhelmed with joy. Currently I have invested on livestock project which has always been my dream. This will helps me in case of any emergency. Currently I intend to save money and buy more livestock. When they have reproduce and many in number I would sell them to pay school fees for my children. I hope to work hard and ensure that my children get the best education. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 370 dollars of the first transfer on purchasing heifer and a oxen. I had always wished to invest on livestock because it helps in case of emergency arising at home, this includes but not limited to paying school fees for my children. I also spent 100 dollars as an instalment for the motorcycle which I purchased on hire purchase, yet to clear the balance when I received the second transfer. This motorcycle is a perfect transfer to my place of work. It saves time and money. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for the family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition is to be financially stable and take up more responsibility for my family. I work as a casual labour who works in house construction. My wife is a stay at home mother taking care of our four children. Being financially stable will mean I am able to be pay school fees for my children and even start up a business. The Give Directly transfer will be of help because I will use it to pay for school fees and start poultry farming by buying 20 chicken to start of, for eggs as well as selling them. This will add to my family's income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Whenever I am fortunate to get a job, I start my day early by waking up at 6 in the morning, take breakfast then go direct to work. As a casual labourer I spend most of my day working in house construction until evening. Whenever I get to see my children come home from school each day learning different things makes me very happy because I took for their happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is financial stability. I work as a casual labourer in house construction and I am not guaranteed an income or a job on a daily basis. Sometimes I stay up to 5 months without being called for such jobs and I am forced to revert to farming in people's farms. My income is not stable and I haven't been able to provide the best education for my children since it's not enough for all their needs.
