How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the aim of achieving financial freedom, my current goal is to join welding school. Recognizing that education is a powerful tool for unlocking opportunities, I am committed to acquiring knowledge and skills that will pave the way for a prosperous future. By investing in my education, I am taking a significant step towards building a solid foundation for financial independence.I now have $40 saved towards my enrolment to the welding school that needs $80, which I feel is a good progress toward achieving my goal.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The quarterly transfers from GiveDirectly have been a blessing for me. Firstly, I used $30 to buy food because our store was empty, ensuring my family didn't go hungry. Then, I invested another $30 in purchasing iron sheets, slowly accumulating materials for the construction of a two-roomed house; I already have 8 sheets and plan to buy one each month. Additionally, I saved $30 to enroll in welding school, fulfilling a long-held dream of gaining expertise in welding. As a casual worker with no fixed job, I rely on my parents for support, but I'm determined to improve my skills and become more self-sufficient. With $40 saved up and hopes to reach $80, I'm eager to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I aspire to build a new house. The current living conditions, in a small, temporary one-room dwelling, are inconvenient for prolonged occupation. My vision entails constructing a new house with two rooms, and I am grateful that the cash transfers have allowed me to steadily acquire building materials, particularly iron sheets. As I accumulate the necessary resources, I plan to hire someone to construct the new house for me. Additionally, my goal is to enroll in college next year to undergo welding training. Saving $10 every month, I am committed to affording my tuition, recognizing and relieving the financial strain my father already experiences with household expenses.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since the inception of the cash transfers, the majority of the funds have been directed toward improving my living conditions by building a better house. Currently residing in a small, deteriorating one-room structure that serves as a temporary shelter, I allocated $30 from the recent transfers to purchase iron sheets for house construction. Concurrently, I set aside $30 from the funds, to utilize these savings to pursue enrollment in a welding college starting next year. This opportunity holds significant meaning for me, as it marks a chance to resume my education after having to drop out in 2019 due to health reasons. Despite recovering, financial constraints prevented me from returning to my studies. The cash transfers have provided a renewed sense of hope, enabling me to consider pursuing education once again. Furthermore, I utilized the remaining $42 to contribute to household needs such as food, aiming to alleviate the burden on my father in supporting the family.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Driven by my vision of a dream home, I took a significant step forward by investing $10 in metal sheets, marking the beginning of my house construction project. Through focused determination and mindful financial planning, I am steadily advancing towards my goal of building a home. The current one is very old and when it rains, it leaks. While ensuring the well-being of my family, I allocated $14 towards purchasing essential food supplies to keep my family in good shape. Recognizing the importance of education, I also saved $10 specifically for college expenses, keeping my aspirations for personal growth and development intact.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goals this year and beyond is to join college and open my own welding shop. I would achieve this by saving part of my transfers to enable me purchase the necessary equipment to start off my business after I would be done with college by the end of this year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is doing everything well in terms of providing financial support to the needy and there is nothing to improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I would want to have my own house and therefore with the transfers that I received, I spent KES. 1000 on buying roofing sheets. I had also wished to have my own business and employ people and therefore I also saved KES 2000 to help me start my welding workshop by the end of the year. With the remaining amount of KES.470, I managed to buy food for my family. I was very grateful for GiveDirectly for the support so far.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the afternoon, I had not gone to work on this particular day because I decide to take some time off from work to just rest my body. I was really worried about the food for that day since I had not gotten to work as I was really tired. I did not have any money. I was sleeping when I heard my phone ring, I thought it was a safaricom message and I almost assumed to check the message but something nudged me to check the message and was surprised to see that GD had sent me that money. I was very happy on seeing this
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have now started working towards my house project. This is quite a big deal to me. I want to build a decent house for myself. MY pay is not much from my daily work to sustain this but my hope is with the GD transfers and my pay I will be able to build myself a nice one roomed house. I had told you earlier that my roof is fall apart its being held by timber because I could not afford nails but now I have bought whole iron sheet which costs more than the nails which means I can now facilitate my building project well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The money I got was important to me. I do not have a house of my own since I still live in one of the structures owned by my parents. I am a grown man who is not supposed to still be living with his parents. I am far advanced in age. I live in a small house which is almost falling apart, the house has loose sheets of iron with timber holding the iron sheets in place. I want to build a house of my own. I got a sheet of iron sheet using my transfers. I was also able to get food that day because of this transfers.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to possess mechanical skills to operate within our area because I have seen a good opportunity for this work. In our local town, we have only 1 person who is capable of repairing motorbikes. This has pushed me to the need of acquiring this skill and my priority once I start receiving my transfers is to enroll in a certificate course on mechanics. This will provide me with the basic skills and hence, to become an independent individual. To ensure this comes to reality, I am required to raise 30000 KES to stand a good chance of accomplishing my modules. By doing this, I will be able to support myself and also my parents who are jobless at the moment. Thus, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
To forget all the worries that I have experienced in my life, I am so grateful to God for the good life that I have enjoyed over the last 6 months. Also, despite being idle, I have never been convinced to engage in any risky behavior and this becomes the reason to keep a smile on my face. Thus, my source of happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Imagine dropping out of school when I was in standard 6, it was the worst decision that I ever made because my parents could never support me at school. My father is jobless and this made me lack his full support. Being at home idle has been the most challenging life for me since I am always worried about the risky exposure from my friends whom I spend most of my time with. Therefore, I consider the lack of a job to keep me busy and earn for myself becomes my greatest worry at the moment.
