How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The money which I received from GiveDirectly enabled me to build a better house for my family. I am happy that I got a house which is more spacious than that which we had before. My new goal is to buy more pieces of land, I had bought a small portion with some savings which I had made from the sale of farm produce. I plan to buy land so that I can have space for carrying out farming. I had bought 4 sheep and as of now they have reproduced and now they are 7 in number. When they double, I will sell some of them so that I can raise money for buying a piece of land. I am happy that GiveDirectly enabled me to acquire this livestock which over time increased in number.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I couldn't imagine that one day I will be harvesting rainwater in my home because I didn't have enough money to build a house with an iron roof. I am happy that the money which is nononrefundablerom GiveDirectly enabled me to improve my livelihood. GiveDirectly gave us money for free and there was nothing that wasn't done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In the second transfer which I received from GiveDirectly, I spent a large portion on buying building materials for completing my house which was under construction. The remaining amount, I spent on buying furniture for my newly constructed house. I am so happy that we have a good shelter and a much more comfortable house to live in. I couldn't afford to build one on my own but GiveDirectly made it possible for me through financial support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 4 pm and I was at home with my wife. I was done with the day's work and I was just relaxing taking tea when suddenly my phone rang hence notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check it, and wow! I could not believe my eyes when I saw that I had received KES 55000 in my mobile money account. I was so happy and I shared the good news with my wife who was so happy too when she heard about it. We celebrated together and we thanked God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into our lives is that we now have another house that is roofed with iron sheets and a calf of our own. We now have a kitchen and the main house for welcoming guests visiting our household. The calf is going to enable us to have our source of milk in the future when it calves. We thus now see ourselves as being on the same level as the rest of the community members since our lives have changed for the better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the recent transfer, that is, KES 35000 on building another house. We built one that is roofed with iron sheets. We decided to build another one because we only had one grass-thatched house. We wanted there to be the main house and a kitchen so that when guests visit our household, we will have somewhere to welcome them. Other than that, we also bought a calf at KES 15000. We didn't have a cow of our own and it has always been our wish to have one. We hence do not usually have a source of milk. We are usually supplied with some from home. Although we have always wanted to achieve the above before, we were not in a position to due to a lack of money. We do not have stable sources of income. We depend on casual jobs that usually earn us money to buy daily food, that is, most especially maize. With the remaining transfer money, we took KES 3000 which we used in buying a bag of maize for our consumption. Maize has for quite some time not been doing well in our area since it usually gets affected by some disease when planted. We also bought a bed and a table. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for supporting us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better housing for my family. currently, we live in a small hut with my family. The but is too small and each time my inlaws visit am forced to borrow a pace where I will spend the night. I plan to use KSH 50, 000 to build a bigger iron-roofed house that can accommodate my children and guests each time they visit. I will also buy a dairy cow worth KES 30,000 since I do not have one. The remaining amount will go for foodstuffs, clothing, and a water tank.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In our family, we welcomed a bundle of joy, a bouncing baby girl who was born on 25th December. That was the happiest moment in my life since I had taken a long time before receiving such blessings from God.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge that I am currently facing is financial constraints. I am a casual worker depending mainly on weeding farms and raising fences. When I am lucky to get a job the average amount of money that I earn on the day I worked is KES 250. This amount is not sufficient to support my family and also pay school fees for my brother who is in secondary school. I am not happy when I see age mates of my brother going to school while my brother stays home to do casual jobs like me.
