Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am very thankful for the transfer I received during such a difficult time. I had maize growing on the farm, but I didn't have the money to harvest it. On that day, the money arrived around 3 PM while I was busy taking care of my livestock. I noticed the message on my phone, but I couldn't read it myself. When I got back home, I asked my children to check the message for me. They excitedly told me that money had arrived from GiveDirectly. I couldn't believe it! I felt a wave of relief wash over me, and I said, "God is with me." It was a blessing, especially since I was worried that the maize would be lost to flooding. The rains had been heavy, and I feared the crops might be washed away. This money meant I could finally harvest my maize and protect my hard work.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before receiving the GiveDirectly money, life was a constant struggle for me and my family. I was the only one working, trying to provide for my nine children while also caring for my elderly mother. I often worried about how I would manage everything. After receiving the transfer, everything changed. I was able to pay laborers and hire a tractor, which allowed me to harvest 33 bags of maize. I was close to losing hope, especially since I feared the maize might be washed away by floods. Without GiveDirectly’s support, I don’t know how I would have managed to harvest or what would have happened to my crops. I truly appreciate your great support, as this maize has provided food for my family and eased our financial burden. Now I can look for other jobs, knowing we have food at home. The happiness in our home has grown tremendously; we feel more secure and hopeful about the future. This support has truly transformed our lives, giving us the chance to thrive instead of just survive. Thank you so much, GiveDirectly, for your support!
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my unconditional cash transfer, it was a great relief for me and my family. I used $15,000 to pay laborers and hire a tractor for transportation, which helped me harvest 33 bags of maize. As a father of nine children, with some in university and others in secondary school, I felt the pressure to provide for their education. My wife is not working because she is taking care of my elderly mother, so I am the sole breadwinner. Life was tough, but this transfer changed everything for us.With the remaining money, I spent $3,000 on clothing and $2,000 on food. Before, we struggled to afford good clothes, but now we can finally buy what we need to look presentable. It was important for us to feel good and shine, especially since my children are in school and need to look their best. Having enough food to eat has also brought joy to our household. Thanks to this support, our lives have improved significantly. I no longer have to rely solely on charcoal burning for income, and I can focus more on my family's needs. We are very happy now, and I am grateful for the help that allowed us to thrive. This transfer has truly made a difference in our lives.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I will spend $150 of the first transfer to keep my family of 10 food secure for the next few months, and $400 to pay my children's school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My aging mother stays with me and is a beneficiary of the government's social protection program that gives stipends to elderly people. She uses some of this income to buy us food, which is a huge relief to my family especially after I lost my crops to heavy rains.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We experienced an abnormal heavy rainfall 2 months ago which has resulted in rising levels of Lake Baringo. The water body has since found its way into the village displaced our farms, submerging maize plantations thus causing a shortage of food. Over this month I have had to sell my livestock to educate my 7 children and provide food for my family of 10. I am worried because this is not sustainable and will sink me into poverty.
