How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main focus is raising enough money for my children's school fees. I have three kids in secondary school, and my income from casual labor is insufficient. Going forward, I will set aside a percentage of my future transfers to help pay for their school fees because a bright future is guaranteed for them through education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly, in my opinion, does well by providing everyone with equal transfers, allowing individuals to coexist happily. Many lives have been transformed because of the transfers, resulting in an improved standard of living.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have two secondary school-going children, one in form two and the other in form three, who owe the school $95 in fee arrears. The huge arrears caused me to lose my peace of mind, so I promised their teacher that I would pay something little through the transfers and my income from the casual jobs I usually engage in to help reduce the burden. To keep my commitment, I used $20 from my most recent transfer to pay part of the school fees and spent the remaining $9 on food for my family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a daughter who did her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations last year and is supposed to join form one this month. I have bought her school uniform and other stationery. She is required to report to school with a school fee of $60. I have already saved her $20, pending $40. I will continue saving part of my income in bits to raise the remaining $40 to enable me to take her to school before the end of this month.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I like the project's design of giving equal transfers to everyone in the village. Giving similar amounts of money reduces cases of conflict and hence makes people coexist well with each other. In addition, I like the surveys that are usually conducted by the organization to check on our progress.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of six working as a casual laborer while my wife is a subsistence farmer. All my six children are school-going, two are in secondary while four are in primary school. When I received my previous month's transfer, I spent $20 of it to pay school fees for my two kids in secondary school. Settling part of the fee arrears helped reduce my financial burdens. I used the remaining $9 to stock more food which lasted us for a week. Having enough food in the house made me enjoy a great piece of mind because it saved me from the high cost of living for a few days.
