How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It has been a great joy to my household seeing all the amazing projects that we have managed to accomplish after receiving both the transfers from GiveDirectly. This support has seen us take huge steps ahead and encouraged us to even work harder in other sectors that we had lost hope in. At the moment, I have a new goal to support my spouse to join a course of her dream that she has been praying for since she completed her secondary studies. He request to pick an education course as she wanted to be a teacher but the plan has always been failing since we didn't have not only enough finances but also the hope of raising enough to keep her going once she joins. With the current morale that we have, we are sure that she will make it through as I also have another plan to establish a poultry unit where I will obtain a brooder that will be hatching chicks that will in turn be sold to the ready market in the community.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, giving everyone a chance to make decisions on how to spend their transfer was the best decision made by GiveDirectly. Everyone in the village made a decision based on their household need, making every one spending to be unique as it was specific to addressing an individual's household problem. Since the first day we interacted with GiveDirectly officers, I have never seen anything to complain about as we were given everything exactly as it was promised.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, I had a lot to do and I am grateful that I finally accomplished them with the help of my supportive spouse whom I was planning with. I started with the construction of a dam currently filled with rainwater and is so useful to my livestock that I am no longer taking them to the river as I used to before. The labor charge I incurred in digging and setting up outlets was KES3000. I also renovated the already constructed house that was already rusting on the roof and had to obtain new iron sheets and paid the labor at a total of KES22000. My house currently looks new on the roof, and even the rainwater that we are collecting is safe for use in the household as they are free of rust. With the plans that we had in place, we also managed to obtain a heifer at KES13000 as we have depended so much on buying milk that was so expensive, injected KES5000 into the small business that my wife started after the first transfer, and used the remaining amount on obtaining household goods.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember very well that it was around 9:25 am in the morning when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I didn't expected any messages from anyone, so I reluctantly check it, only to realized that it was a message indicating that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I left everything I was doing and rush to inform my spouse. She was so happy and we immediately plan on renovating our house and starting a business that will generate an income to our family. We are so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to live a better life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have started a business of buying and selling maize. I spent 400 dollars on this amazing business which I had always wished to start. I do casual jobs in the village and small scale farming. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I used to wake up very early in the morning to look for a job and sometimes I could not get it. My family could go hungry. When I received the transfer I found it wise to invest in income generating project. We had discussed this with my spouse and agreed on selling maize. Currently we get some profits from this and we save some and invest back some to expand the business. My children are no longer go hungry. I have devoted much of my time doing this business. I wish to grow it to meet all the demand of my customers. I have hope that I will sell other serials also and even start a retail shop .I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has given us hope to work hard and ensure that we provide for our families.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent 400 dollars of the transfer to start a new business of selling maize. This business earns me an income to meet other basic household needs. I also spent part of the money on renovating my house to look better than before. Finally I bought food for the family and bedding. We used to sleep on worn out bedding and this was so demoralizing especially when I had visitors at home. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My journey to financial freedom started one year ago when I landed a contractual job at one of the road construction firm. The dream was short lived when my contract ended without an extension. Since then, I have been yearning to have a source of income of my own. Receiving this money means that I will invest in poultry project at a cost sh 40,000 shillings. I will then buy an incubator for 30,000 and start brooding. In the long run I see my freedom to financial freedom resuming. This is from the sale of their products.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Nowadays with little employment opportunities, I spend most of my daytime looking after the cattle. During this period, I graze them and sometimes give them animal feeds. My happiest part of the day is in the morning since this is the time I milk them. It is at this time also, that I experience high volume of milk that I take them to our neighbouring supplier for sale. The proceeds is then used to fend for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a mechanic by profession. Getting job opportunities has been an uphill task for me. Sometimes I land some contractual jobs from road construction sites that pays very little. This little I get cannot sustain my family since my wife is still schooling. With no regular source of income, the struggle of raising her school fees, cater for their basic needs and have something small to save sums up the biggest hardship I face.
