How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No new goals for now and I am thankful for the ones that I accomplished. The goats being one of them has brought a huge impact on my life. Currently, two have started reproducing and I am hopeful that I will have many of them within a short period. Since paying school fees for my children has been a challenge, I will be selling one or two goats and settling the arrears.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did an awesome job in making sure that they transformed the lives of each individual in the village. Apart from that, we were well informed on how to secure against scammers. This enlightened most of us and there were no cases of such kind.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as new building poles, and pieces of iron sheets which cost around KES 17000. This was specifically for the construction of a kitchen and a granary. Previously I used to cook on the veranda and store my items under the trees which were not safe. Apart from that, I started a hotel business in the village that I am currently operating. For all those years I have been jobless and I had been wishing to have a capital and start a business in vain. I am so happy about this empowerment that at least I now have an income that can cater to all our family's basic needs. Finally, with the amount of money that had remained, I bought foodstuffs for my family which lasted for almost three weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10am and I was out in the field looking after my livestock, when I got the SMS confirming that I have received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I hadn't expected to get such an amount, it was great happiness.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I was able to settle my children's school fees arrears, the debts in the various local kiosks where I used to take some commodities on credit. I was also able to buy food in plenty which was an impossibility before, I am so grateful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 15000 on settling my children's school fees arrears because I didn't want their education to be disrupted or interrupted by lack of school. I was stranded because I actually didn't have any source of income, therefore, when I received the money from GiveDirectly, I made sure that the school fees arrears are settled because their good education isn't only going to benefit them alone but also myself as I will be able to count on them in the future to help me address the financial challenges I will be facing. I also spent KES 10000 on buying four goats because I consider them as a tribute to GiveDirectly for I will always remember the assistance I received. They are also an investment that will live on, will multiply and increase in numbers which inturn I'll be able to sell one or two in the future to address the challenges I will be facing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I had enrolled my child in an electrical course but he dropped out because of the fee balances. He still depends on me, receiving this money I will take my kid back to finish his course and be independent. With the remaining amount, I will buy ten goats because they can survive with the environment and their gestation period is less hence they will multiply easily.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had some debts at the shopping center where we buy food on credit. I was unable to be given food because of the big debt. Last month my son cleared all the debt and even gave me some money to buy foodstuffs for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not having a stable source of income is my challenge. With the prolonged drought in our area getting food and water is a problem. I have to buy to cater for my family, this hinders me not to save any amount I get from my charcoal-burning activity.
