How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In addition to the sisal business, I'm involved in charcoal burning business. With the extra capital injected into my sisal business, I'm confident that the increased returns will sustain our family's needs, including my daughter's school fees. This ensures her education completion and securing a brighter future for her.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing an outstanding job, and I wouldn't want anything to change about their approach.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We had a small home where my husband, my secondary school daughter, and I lived. We had made plans to build a better house for us, but the plans were not coming to fruition because of a lack of funds. With the second transfer, I used $180 to finish the construction of our house, which I had started building with the first transfer, and now our new home fills us with happiness. Additionally, I kept aside $200 for my daughter's secondary school fees. Furthermore, I invested $80 in my sisal business with hopes of increased yields. I used the remaining funds for food expenses and family utilities.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the trading center at around 3 p.m., trying to make ends meet like every other day. My phone, suddenly vibrated twice rapidly. Since I did not know how to read, I ignored it until I reached home in the evening. When I got there, my son, who had been out of school for a while because we couldn't afford his fees, read and interpreted the message for me. I was filled with a rush of joy and happiness when I heard that the first transfer from GiveDirectly had been sent to my account. It was like a weight lifting off my shoulders, knowing my son would finally be able to resume his classes.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As a casual laborer, life was a constant struggle. I remember the days when I had to live in a makeshift kitchen after my old house collapsed, the rain leaking through was terrible during rainy days and nights. But then, something incredible happened. I became a recipient of GiveDirectly, and it changed everything. With the cash transfer, I was finally able to pay off the accumulated school fees for my son. The smile on his face when he put on that school uniform again is something I'll never forget. And that's not all, I used part of the money to build a safe house for us. No more worries about leaks, no more nights of uncertainty. Now, we have a secure roof over our heads, and my son is getting the education he deserves. GiveDirectly didn't just change my life; it transformed our future. I'm filled with gratitude for the chance they gave us to break free from the cycle of poverty and build a better life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was facing some tough times, but then something wonderful happened. I received the cash transfer from the GiveDirectly program. My heart swelled with hope because I knew exactly how to use it. My secondary school son had been sitting at home for so long because I couldn't afford his school fees. With the money, I rushed to the school and paid his $200 school fees. Seeing him back in school, smiling and eager to learn, made me the happiest parent. But that wasn't all. My house had collapsed I was living in my little mud-walled kitchen which was not safe. I knew I needed a proper house. So, I used some of the cash to buy 24 pieces of iron sheets for $238. Then, I hired a skilled contractor for $100 to help me build a new, safe, and comfortable home. Now, I sleep soundly every night, knowing that my son is getting an education, and we have a secure roof over our heads. All thanks to GiveDirectly, my life has taken a turn for the better, and I'm filled with gratitude for the help and hope they provided me.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
A house for me! It has been 3 months now since my house collapsed and I seek help from my daughter-in-law while my husband shares a house with my son. This is something that has given me the pressure of the need to construct my house. Since I do not have money, it has never been possible, a situation that has brought me shame. With this money, I intend to spend $300 to ensure the housing problem is offset. This will restore my dignity and bring back my joy as a mother. On the other hand, I will invest in sheep rearing because they do multiply faster. For this project, I will start with 10 sheep at $300. The remaining amount will help me to support my son's education. Hence, this is basically what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Considering the tough life in our area in terms of economic activities, it becomes even more challenging when it's coupled with sickness. What I am grateful for in my life is the good health that we have enjoyed with my family. None of us have complained of illness and I, therefore, consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is what has made my life so tough. Balancing between buying food, education for my son and housing is so challenging because my charcoal work earns me very little, mostly $60 per month. Looking at my needs, food, and education become top of my priorities and this has forced me to seek refuge from my daughter-in-law's house since mine collapsed 3 months ago. The backlash I have received from the community does not give me peace because it is considered taboo to share a house with an in-law. Therefore, this is the situation that has robbed away my joy as a parent and I consider it my biggest challenge.
