How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Business used to be down initially. It was hard to even sell one sack of maize in a day. Now as we speak (noon), I have already sold four times what I used to struggle to sell a whole day. By end of day, I sell between 15-20 sacks and get good returns. Maize has a high demand in these sides. GD has brought such an awakening! I am even now optimistic I will own a pickup truck soon for transportation; something I never dreamed of. This is a miracle to say the least. GiveDirectly is God-sent in my view. We have been transformed as a people. The future is good for us courtesy of GiveDirectly. All we say is Thank You for the funds GD sent us.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my view, GiveDirectly did well by not discriminating against anybody in a village. GD sent all residents the funds and fulfilled the good promise they gave us. We are grateful for this. I do not see something that could be wrong in what GD does. I especially applaud the integrity with GD enrolled us. I believe that if GD goes on doing the work it does with the openness they have, they will be just fine.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the major part of my second cash transfer from GiveDirectly on restocking my existing business of maize. It has picked tremendously. The proverbial bible story of Lazarus is the story of my business (he was raised by Jesus from the dead having been dead for 4 days). My business is currently resurrected and booming because my clients are GD beneficiaries, they buy maize en-masse. I traveled to a far county to get the stock for sale. I plan to use the balance on clothing and bedding, I fee this is what we need too.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is my economic status which has improved. I was able to pay debt and my business is bigger and better. I am stress-free; I used to worry and be anxious due to lack of funds yet many needs. I am now happy and at peace courtesy of the funds from GiveDirectly that met the needs in a sufficient manner.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received GiveDirectly transfer when I was in my cereals store at the shopping center, I was so happy and cautious too fearing that someone might steal from me. I even changed my PIN details immediately and transferred the cash to a savings account on my phone to ensure safety. I decided to keep it to myself first then went to withdraw the cash after three days. My family was excited to learn that we had received the funds from GD.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent the first transfer that I received from GiveDirectly to add stock to my business of cereals. I added up to 45 kgs of cereals and I had been operating with 15 kgs. This has translated to good profit and my business is doing well. I also bought mattresses, blankets, clothes and utensils : we needed these but had not been able to buy them due to lack of funds. I then paid a loan that I had taken to pay school fee. Thank you for the transfer.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is having a huge debt.I had borrowed one hundred and forty Kenyan shillings from Cooperative bank and started a shop together with a grocery,I was hoping it could pick up and help me pay back the loan but it did not.The repayment period was close and the bank was on my neck that I had to sell part of my parcel of land.It was a trying moment for me.
