Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was preparing supper that evening and I was thinking out loud what we'll have for breakfast the next morning because I was so broke and I didn't know if my husband would come home with anything. The transfers felt like savior because I knew my life will never be the same again.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Previously, we were not able to save because of the little income but now, we can save at least KES 200 per day and we'll be able to do something meaningful in the long run.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and the sole provider of our family has been employed as a motorbike taxi rider for the longest time and our wish has always been to buy his own motorbike. Since the highest that he can earn per day is KES 500 and comes home with KES 200 after giving his boss his share, he has never been able to save because he has to provide for the family. Upon being enrolled into the program, our goals was to buy a motorbike so that he can have a reliable source of income. We had sourced for a good second hand motorbike and after receiving the transfers, I spent KES 50000 to pay for the motorbike, KES 2000 to do the servicing and bought a sack of maize worth 1500. I'm a so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Our uncle gave us this piece of land to live on, this is making our lives difficult to invest in better housing. Upon receiving this money, I will use KES 80000 to buy 0.1 acres and build a better house. My husband is the sole breadwinner and depends on casual jobs to provide for us. He earns about KES 200 per day which is little to support us. This makes his dream of buying a piece of land impossible. With the remaining money, I will consider buying a cow to enable us to earn more income through the sale of milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband managed to buy us a better couch with his little savings. This made me happy as I am now comfortable and ready to receive visitors without shame.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We do not have a stable source of income, this makes us experience perennial food shortages and other family basic needs like clothing. My husband works on casual jobs earning him about KES 200 per day, this money is not enough to support the family.
