How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I managed to renovate and add a new room to my rental house. Its previous state was deplorable and this made me lower the rental charges. This was a big loss to me because this was the asset that I relied on for my family's daily bread. Therefore after receiving the money I had to prioritize it by renovating and adding another room. I am now a happy tenant because I even opted to increase the charges and due to that, I have been able to meet my family's needs without straining. Also, the solar panel that has purchased has been of great to me for not only providing us with light but also charging my phone and those of my neighbors at a fee.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDiretly did so well by making sure that they visited each household and offered financial support. The majority of us now have decent houses which has been everyone's dream but because of the financial difficulties, we ended up sheltering in grass-thatched houses. Also, we managed to send all our children to school whereby some had even dropped out becasue of the fees arrears. Therefore I do not see any sector GiveDirectly went wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying school fees for my son who is in his second year in college. Paying fees has been the major challenge and most of the time he couldn't sit for exams due to the huge fees arrears. Also, I bought some building materials such as iron sheets, bags of cement, and timber. This was for the addition of one room to my rental house since it only had three rooms and I thought of adding one so that I can get good returns. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuff for my family

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember very well when I was heading to the farm at exactly 8 AM. Then I heard some of the neighbors celebrating while mentioning GiveDireclty. I definitely knew something has happened. I decided to check my phone since it was in silent mode, only to realize that I had received my first transfer as promised. I was overwhelmed with joy and even join the rest in celebrating.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having have renovated my pit latrine makes the biggest difference in my life. Some days back, I managed to construct a temporary pit whereby we could help ourselves, but then it very risky. Because the pit was very deep and it was not well constructed from above. Due to that, we had to use those of my neighbors and sometimes would help themselves in the bushes which were unhealthy because sometimes they were attacked by some water-born diseases such as cholera. I am now happy because the financial support empowered me to renovate my own latrine and we longer use our friends or the bushes. This has really reduced the high chance of being attacked with the communicable disease.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my firsts transfer on buying some building materials and such bricks and some pieces of iron sheets. I purchased all these purposely to renovate my pit latrine. Also, I cleared school fees arrears for my children who are in secondary school. I then boosted my business of selling chicken and shoes in the nearby town center. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition is to educate my children and I have been working extra hard to achieve this. This has pushed me to take loans from a sacco. My plan therefore is to set up a poultry project alongside planting vegetables. This will help me to generate more income to raise their school fees. I will also use part of this transfer to clear part of this semester's fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I am always energized at this time after quality rest. I always thank God for giving me a chance to see another day with the ability to conduct my daily duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Besides subsistence farming, I am a member of the Board of Management at our local secondary school. However, I do not get enough money from this because much of my salary is servicing the loans. I only receive 2000 shillings a month. This makes it hard to meet all our family needs since my husband is a polygamous man and I take care of my children almost single handedly. My life is fully of debts due to lack of insufficient income which is my biggest hardship.
