How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, my primary objective is to save up for building materials to construct a new house for my two sons. They currently live in a small, deteriorating house, which exposes them to harsh conditions, particularly during the rainy season. My goal is to provide them with a secure and comfortable home, alleviating their fears associated with adverse weather. A new house will not only enhance their safety but also contribute significantly to their overall well-being. I eagerly anticipate the day when they can live in a more comfortable and secure environment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Relying on casual jobs to make ends meet has been challenging due to the scarcity of reliable work opportunities. With a son in secondary school, I use my transfers to cover his school fee balance of $90, ensuring he remains in school without interruption. The remaining $16 is allocated to food and essential household items. These transfers have significantly assisted in securing my son's education and allowing him to concentrate on his studies without worries. I am grateful that these transfers have enabled my son to complete his studies successfully.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Over the next year, my focus is on saving to acquire building materials for my two sons' house. Currently, they reside in a small, dilapidated house, a situation that forces then to endure harsh conditions, especially during the rainy season. The impending goal is to provide them with a new and secure house, to reduce the fear associated with adverse weather conditions. A new house will not enhance their safety but also contribute to their overall well-being. As a result of this, I look forward to seeing them living in comfortable environment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my monthly transfers, I have successfully addressed both the nutritional and educational needs of my family. Over the last three months, I have always allocated $15 each month to cover the school fees for my son, who is currently in secondary school. The remaining part of the transfer, which amounts to $19, has been instrumental in obtaining food for my family. The impact of these transfers has greatly improved our well-being, making daily existence more bearable. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support, as these transfers have made a meaning positive difference in the well-being of my family.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm currently purchasing construction materials in bits. My children's house is too small, and constructing a more spacious one would be appropriate. With the plan in mind, I have identified pieces of iron sheets that would be needed each costing $13. My other goal is to ensure my children's school fees is paid without any difficulties. There was a period when my eldest daughter couldn't attend school for two months due lack of fees, and I am determined to prevent a similar situation from occurring again to any of my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm so grateful for the transfers. I used $23.7 to buy a bundle of maize flour and the remaining $10 to buy other essential household items. With the current school holidays, all my six children are at home. The eldest is 18-years-old while the youngest is 6-years old. In light of this situation, I'm forced to prepare three meals daily to sustain them. My husband's employment situation as a casual laborer lacks stability, and his income has never been consistent. He spends extended periods away from the village and returns after almost three months. Lastly,I managed to purchase a bed and a mattress for my children. These purchases were made possible through the savings of previous transfers.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
GD has made several of my dreams a reality. I was able to get a goat, pay school fees for my children to ensure they are in school, and also have a good bed for her children to sleep in. By the time GD was giving me this financial assistance I was winding down my project to build the house I am living in. It is a three-roomed house which accommodates my family. However, I would like to redirect some finances to build a house for my sones. Out of my 6 children, two are boys and I would like them to have a house they can live in and have some privacy. I am privy to the fact that at a point boys want that space and this house will give them that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I hear the name Givedirectly and my heart skips with joy. I am so thankful for GD. I do not have a job and my husband was laid off from work in June last year. It was so hard taking care of our six children by just doing casual work. He works as a casual laborer on construction sites and this does not make much for us. I had been so worried as to how I would get my son into school since he was joining form one. When I received this transfer from GD around this time I used $12 to buy a uniform, I bought a bag worth $10 and shoes worth $14. In February I started the process of paying school fees as termly fees are about $90. I paid $25 for school fees in February and $25 in March. I was also able to buy food at $9 in February and $4 in March.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The GiveDirectly transfers have been so helpful to us, and we are forever grateful. So far, through these transfers, I have bought a decent bed and mattress for my children and also bought a goat for rearing. My current plan with the transfer is to join hands with my spouse and pay my children's school fees. I have six school-going children at different levels of education. I also plan to build a better house for my boys, as the one in which they are currently living is quite small. This will allow them to have space to do their studies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was instantly excited when I realized that I had finally received the cash transfers because at the time there was hardly any food in the house and going hungry was quite common in my household. Therefore I immediately went ahead to withdraw the transfers and I ended up using KES 2,400 by purchasing a bag of maize flour which contained twelve packets and a kilogram of sugar. Afterwards I proceeded to spend the remaining balance which was KES 1,000 to pay for tuition for four of my children because they were constantly being sent home after I had failed to settle the debt on time.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I had some fee arrears for my daughter, I opted to spend all my recent transfers on reducing his balance. I had outsourced some money elsewhere because he had a lot of arrears. Headteacher could not allow him to continue with his studies minus the fee. I, therefore, count myself lucky to have received my transfer at such a time. My child can now concentrate in school courtesy of the transfers from GiveDirectly. I do not have much to say, but I remain indebted for such unique financial aid.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Transforming lives in a positive way has been the major goal from GiveDirectly with the unconditional transfers we receive. The lesser communities have been able to uplift themselves and complete different projects they had set to accomplish.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being jobless and operating daily as a housewife with no sustainable income has been a major hustle for quite a while. I am married to one husband who does construction jobs that pay less and what he gathers as income is the daily survival. Together we are blessed with six children whom we do our best to see they have a better future. The KES 3000 from GiveDirectly has been been major boost, since I have had to get my son a scientific calculator worth KES 1500 for school purposes ensuring he does not get sent home due to lack of the study materials. Chama savings have helped in a major way in regards to future expenditure and I have been able to transfer KES 500 to the savings account making a total of KES 3800, which I can use for different projects in the near future. The remainder KES 1000 I bought food for my family as what was left was quite minimal and could not sustain us for a long time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was filled with so much joy when I got the funds. It also gave me a sense of relief. I was on my way to the shop to buy my 6 children some food on credit. When I got there, a friend started cheering saying she had received some money. When I inquired, she told me that she had received from give directly. I hurriedly checked my phone and confirmed that I also got it. Since an Mpesa shop was not near, I still bought on credit and the following day, I withdrew the money and settled the debt.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My husband works as a handyman at a construction site. Often, I feel like I depend on him a lot. So, for a while now, I've been wanting to be independent. After I started receiving these funds, there has been a great difference in my life. I am now able to support the children and also cater to my needs when I need to. This is when I haven't earned from my charcoal manufacturing business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of six children. One is in secondary and the rest are in primary school. On this day, one of them had a very old school uniform. For this reason, the teachers would harass her and also send her home. So, when I got the funds, my first thought was to buy her some uniforms. When she resumes school, she will be more confident in herself and she won't be bullied. My work as a charcoal manufacturer earns me very little and I couldn't afford it. The amount that remained, I used to buy some maize flour now that the kids are at home getting food has been a challenge for me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We have six children. My husband works as a mason in Vipingo Ridge. His salary does not cater to all our needs. He ensures that we have enough food and school fees are paid partially. This means that the balance keeps piling up with every passing school term. We are in arrears of KES 10,000. With these transfers, I can offset these arrears and allow my husband to focus on buying food and be able to repair our roof. Once these arrears are settled, I will think of a grocery business. If I put aside KES 6,000, I can be able to start and keep adding stock to it as time goes by.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy when my husband sends home some food and money for upkeep. He does not have a lot of money but his priorities are well set. He thinks of making us comfortable before anything else. I appreciate his effort and determination.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
All the challenges that I am facing revolve around money. My children keep coming back home due to arrears. If I could find a solution to this, my heart would be at peace.
