How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The cash transfers enabled the payment of school fees. This relieved me from the stress of borrowing money for school fees and medical care. Secondly, the cash transfers changed my social status. I was able to acquire household property such as livestock and new clothes for the children. All these could not have been possible if GiveDirectly had not sent the cash transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well to send the poor people cash transfers without using intermediaries.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of the cash transfers to pay school fees for the children and part of it was spent to hire a piece farm land. I also bought some clothes for the children.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The cash transfers has relieved me of the school fees burden. I have paid school fees for my four children. Previously, I had to borrow money from savings schemes so as to meet their demands. This was very stressful to me and it was draining me financially. With the cash transfers, I can now independently struggle and cater for other family needs with no tension.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was extremely happy when I read the mobile money message early that day. I was excited because this transfer was going to lessen my burdens and responsibilities.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent UGX 850000 to purchase a cow and UGX 500000 to pay for school fees. I spent UGX 150000 to purchase clothes and the balance was spent on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ex-wife seperated with me living behind 4 children and I'm the one taking care of them single handedly. Its time I feel I need a companion to help me raise the children my ex-wife left. So, when I receive this money, I will use it for marriage arrangements to help me get another woman. I will use it to get dowry.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when people are back from the garden. Its the time I get to share with them while relaxing and resting.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is raising my children as a single father. Its not easy for me because even providing for them is hard due to lack of money.
