How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I really aspire to buy a piece of land. It doesn't have to be so big. A half an acre will be okay. On this piece of land, I'll build a 3 bed-roomed house. This is because I have plans of relocating from my ancestral land. This will cost me approximately kshs 320,000.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly is doing everything perfectly. You have given us money to start businesses. Just the name Give Directly gives me a happy feeling. The fact that the money you give us is non refundable makes you the best. I actually see nothing you should improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent kshs 46,000 of my second transfer to buy a motorbike. This is because I wanted to do 'boda boda' business. I'm already doing it and I'm glad that I make between kshs 700 and kshs 1,000 daily. I chose this because I needed something that would last for a long time. I used kshs 6,000 to buy one goat that I intend to start milking soon. I also bought clothes worth kshs 2,000 for my 2 children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 5 pm that day, while stressed up because I was broke and just wandering at the nearby shopping center because I did not get casual labor that day. That's when I heard a message alert on my phone, upon checking, I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was extremely happy and immediately headed to the shop for food items and headed straight home. On my arrival home, my wife was shocked and overwhelmed with joy at the same time because of the shopping bought and the cash.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is the availability of capital for the livestock broking business. As a result, I have a steady income flow and therefore financially independent. Secondly, through the transfers, I have cleared this year's school fees for my kids. As a result, I am relieved of the stress of paying school fees. And my kids can fully concentrate on their studies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of five and have been working as a casual motorcycle rider and livestock selling agent. The income from these has helped feed my family and school my kids. Working as a livestock broking agent job for the past three years had its challenges. This is because as the middle man the owners would underrate us, especially during payment. Therefore, when I received the transfers I used KES 30,000 as capital for the livestock broking business. As a result, I am confidently doing my business and can challenge the livestock owners unlike before. Secondly, KES 20,000 was spent on school fees payment for my daughter and son in high school. This has ensured my kids concentrate on their studies unlike before when they used to be sent in and out of school. Similarly, KES 5000 was spent on the latest clothing fashion for my family. Initially, I used to afford second-hand clothes. Lastly, KES 1000 was spent on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My wife left us in March 2021 after he was threatened by individuals she owed some money. She had taken a loan of KES 40,000 and she could not pay back on time. I'm happy that once I get Give Directly money, I'll payback the debts to enable my wife come back home.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We were able to settle part of the loan my wife owed some people in the neighborhood. We had received some money from little harvest we had last season in December. This was impressive and made us happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Debtors who keep following up with my wife debts yet I can't afford to pay them. I'm struggling to pay my son's school fees from a little income that I get from casual jobs. This is not enough to pay debts.
