How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Ideally, I usually set goals and targets if I have money at hand or I have seen the potential of getting some money. This is because planning without some money to facilitate the vision gives me a rough time because I will be ever thinking about the set goals hence depriving me of my peace of mind.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through GiveDirectly, I was able to get a cow and a goat. This organization has helped many in our society. The biggest thing that will make me not to forget GiveDirectly is the fact that it enabled me to pay part of my daughter-in-law’s dowry and I will never be alone again at home, I have someone to converse with. Once I see her it reminds me of GiveDirectly because it would take ages for her to come if it were not for this organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a mother, I had desired to get a daughter-in-law; my son had a fiancée only that he had no enough money to make the marriage happen. Upon withdrawing the money I took KES 30000.00 and gave it to him to add on whatever he had to start the marriage process. Thereafter, I bought a cow and a goat for KES 12000.00 and KES 4500.00 respectively. I bought the livestock to mark the beginning of animal raring at my home since I had none. After doing all that, I used the remaining amount of money in buying food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy when I got the money because I had gotten all that money which was going to help me get the things I had desired. I was very grateful the moment I received the money from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is how much good life I can say I am now living compared to when I hadn't started receiving money from GiveDirectly. I now have a bed and mattress, my children as well. I am so proud and grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on buying two bed and mattresses which cost a total of KES 21100 because we had only one little bed that was not very comfortable, whereas my children used to sleep on the floor because they neither had a bed nor a mattress. This made me desire to get a bed and mattress for myself and my children too. Therefore, I am very grateful and happy that I was able to get the things that I desired so much. I also spent KES 13000 to buy four goats because they are an investment and will be an unending tribute to GiveDirectly for the assistance it gave to me. This is because I believe that they live on, multiply and increase in numbers, and I will always remember the great help I received from GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved living standard to my household. I have been sleeping on a traditional bed since I was born .Due to this I have not been getting comfort and everytime I wake up in the morning my body aches because of the tight ropes and the old mat that I use as a bedding.I am therefore planning to spend KES 50,000- to buy two beds and mattresses for my co-wife and I as well as renovating the family house.I will use the second transfer to purchase four goats at KES 3000 each which do well in our area since it is very dry.As they multiply I will sell at a profit and meet my personal needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening .This is the moment when I am resting after spending the while day in the hot sun at the charcoal production site. I share meals with my family chat and retire to bed.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life is lack of money. This is because I depend on charcoal production as a source of income. The business is Labour intensive and the return is KES 2400.The money is not enough for all domestic needs such as food and water that I must buy since it scarce. The drought has caused a lot of stress and anxiety, one must have money to get water. Due to this I have been struggling to save money so as to uplift my life. Sometimes I feel so sad that I think it is like the world is against me .
