Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was overjoyed when I finally received my first transfer five months after enrolling. Every other person in the village had received the transfer, and I was on the verge of giving up when I received a notification message. I never ignored the message that turned out to be the good news because I was curious. My children were still at school, and my husband was at work, so I was alone at home that evening. I called him and informed him of the exciting news. I had to wait until the next day to collect the money from the nearby shopping center because it was late in the evening.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the hope of finally providing enough space for my children by building a new house. Even though the construction is not yet complete, I am grateful for GiveDirectly's assistance in making my dream a reality. My children are also excited because they have been living in a single hut since they were born and will soon have their own room where they can sleep and study every evening.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $180 on 19 iron sheets used in the construction of a new house to replace the single old one that served multiple functions. My children had been sleeping in poor conditions due to a lack of space in the house; after building a new house, they now have more space and clean bedding. I also purchased $30 worth of wood to complete the wall construction and $20 worth of roofing frames. We could not afford to spend a lot of money on labor because my husband is a contractor, except when we needed to roof the new house because he didn't have much experience fixing roofs. I also paid $40 in school fees for my four primary school school children. I later spent the remainder on foodstuffs that we still use today.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means regaining my privacy since I am planning to use the transfer to construct a decent two-bedroom semi-permanent house for my children. I have been sharing the same room with my children for so long and this has denied me the privacy I always desire. This house will cost me KES 30,000. I will use whatever remains from the GiveDirectly transfers to pay for my children's school fees and later buy food for my family of six.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Seeing my children playing in the compound is the only thing that makes me happy as a mother.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have had toothache problems for over a decade now. Every now and then, the pain persists and I am forced to visit the nearest hospital. With the high cost of treatment, this has become a burden to myself and my family at large.
