How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The fact that I now have a pair of oxen and the two heifers makes the difference in my life. In the next few months, I will be getting some milk for my family consumption an this will be a supplement to their daily meals making them healthier. I will definitely save the money that I have been using to buy the milk from neighbors. Also with the remaining few liters, I will sell them to the local market ad generate an income. In addition to that, the oxen will majorly help me on my farm since I have always been hiring time of my neighbors which were very costly. It is now a relief to me considering my old age.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well compared to the previous NGOs because we were given money directly to our phones. This made it so pleasing because everyone has his or her own needs in his household. So the fact that we were given money, we had the opportunity to choose how we could spend the money on.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some livestock such as a pair of oxen at KES 45000. These have been my well thoughtful assets for a long period of time but because of the poverty that had stricken my household, I could not afford to purchase them. I also bought abed a mattress at this was to replace the old beddings that I have been using previously at KES 8000. The remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having the pair of oxen is the biggest difference that I can mention in my life as at now. This is because the pair will really help me in my agricultural activities greatly. Previously I used to dig and plant using my own hands which was so tiresome. I could only plough a small portion of my farm. Sometimes I could hire someone to plough my farm which was a bit expensive. It is now a relief to me since I will no longer hire or even do the exercise since the pair is capable of doing it in fewer days. Secondly, I will hire to anyone in need at a fee and get am income. This will be my source of income. I will no longer strain in meeting my family's basic needs.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I still remember vividly it was around 6:45 am when I was from the washroom then I heard my phone ringing. I decided to call my son to come and check what the notification was all about. After checking, he realized it was an mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt wow! I knew I would achieve a lot.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen. I have been yearning to keep them in my compound but due to my low income, I could not afford it. They were very expensive and only some few individuals could own then in my village. I settled in buying them specifically for my farming activities. Due to my old age, I no longer have the strength to prepare the farm with my own hands. In addition to this, I bought a bed and a mattress. Initially, I used to sleep on the floor and I was always attached by some harmful insects. The remaining amount of money, I bought some foodstuffs and other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to leave an inheritance to my children and grandchildren. I will buy livestock specifically indigenous cows and goats which I can share among them later. I also wish to buy a bed and mattress so I can sleep comfortably and prevent the back pains I have been experiencing from sleeping on the floor.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have my peer whom we get along very well because we share a lot of experiences such as both of us losing our wives, being agemates etc. We visit each other everyday in the afternoons making it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship is lack of income to meet my needs such as food and medical care for my failing health. Due to old age, I have been experiencing ill health such as poor eyesight and hearing problems. It has been my desire to seek medical treatment to improve my situation but the finances required have been hard to come by since I have no source of income. I entirely depend on my children for all my needs but they too have their own family responsibilities and have to prioritize them.
