How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, my fervent hope is for the continued expansion of my business. I aspire to open a new shop in a different location, a dream I have nurtured for a while. To turn this dream into reality, I will set aside $1000 as capital for the new venture. My plan is to leverage not only the profits from my thriving boutique but also the income from our farm, particularly from maize sales, to fund this expansion. What brings me the greatest joy is knowing that this growth will secure the financial stability of my family of six. The profits generated from the business will not only sustain us but also allow us to thrive and reach for our dreams. It is a vision I am determined to turn into reality, a testament to the positive changes in our lives, and a promise of a brighter and more secure future for my loved ones.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The impact of GiveDirectly's assistance has been truly transformative for many families. Personally, I am immensely grateful for the way GiveDirectly listens and responds to feedback. It is a testament to their commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those they assist. When the community voiced their concerns and complaints, GiveDirectly took swift action to address the issues, ensuring that those who were initially left out were registered. This proactive response brought a sense of fairness and equity to the process, leaving everyone in the community elated. However, I do share a concern. Some of the elderly members in the community were not registered, likely due to the eligibility criteria in place. It is disheartening to think that these vulnerable individuals might have been left out of this invaluable support. As we look ahead, I earnestly hope that in future programs, special consideration will be given to the elderly. They are a vital part of our community, and their needs and challenges should be addressed to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, can benefit from the support offered by GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My family and I had grown accustomed to these bitter mornings, for they were a constant reminder of the financial struggle that had enveloped our lives. Before GiveDirectly, our existence was a daily battle against an empty bank account, unpaid bills, and dreams deferred. I could not bear to see the disappointment in my children's eyes, knowing that I could not provide for them as I wished. When I received the transfers, I embarked on a journey to rejuvenate my small boutique business. I spent all the transfers on purchasing fresh stock, and I watched as my boutique transformed into a vibrant and inviting space filled with beautiful clothing and accessories. My family of six depends on this boutique for our livelihood, as they are now pursuing their dreams without the burden of financial worry. I am at peace with my life since it has changed a lot. Every morning, when I open the doors to my boutique, I am filled with a sense of purpose and gratitude. The once-dreaded cold mornings are now a reminder of the strength and resilience that brought us here. We are not just surviving; we are thriving, and I have the transfers to thank for that. They transformed my life, my family's life, and our future. I am living proof that sometimes all it takes is a small helping hand to turn a life around and light the path to a brighter, more hopeful future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On a bright afternoon, as I attended a gathering in the neighboring village, my phone unexpectedly erupted with a loud vibration, capturing the attention of everyone around me. Excusing myself, I checked the notification and was overwhelmed with joy to discover that GiveDirectly had fulfilled their promise of an unconditional cash transfer. Gratitude flooded my heart as I thanked God for this blessing. With newfound hope, I knew that our struggling business of selling clothes could finally be revived, bringing prosperity and stability to our lives once more.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since the introduction of unconditional cash transfers from GiveDirectly into my life, the most profound transformation has been the liberation from the constant struggle that plagued me as a father trying to support my family. Previously immersed in the unpredictable business of selling clothes, I would often find myself drenched in sweat, battling to make ends meet. The weight of providing for my children, putting food on the table, and paying their school fees was an unceasing burden. However, with the steady support from GiveDirectly, that relentless sweat has transformed into a sigh of relief. No longer do I fear failing to provide nourishment for my children or secure their education. This newfound stability has not only elevated my family's standard of living but has also gifted me the invaluable luxury of witnessing my children thrive without the shadow of uncertainty looming over our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As the unconditional cash transfer came into my hands, a sense of relief washed over me. It was a chance to rebuild what I had lost before. With part of the money, I wasted no time breathing life back into my clothing business, investing a sum of $400. I had run this venture before, but life's hardships had forced me to drain its capital. My three children's education and the ever-increasing cost of living took their toll on my business. But this time, things were different. With the financial burden eased, I could focus on my business without worrying. I could afford to provide for my family's basic needs, pay my three children's fees with ease, and even put food on the table without struggling. Additionally, I turned my attention to my struggling agribusiness, which had always lacked the capital it deserved. With the newfound funds, I could expand and develop it further, bringing life back to the farm and securing a more stable income for the future. It was a dream come true, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to turn my life around. Grateful for the blessings that came my way, I also offered a tithe of $55 in church, giving back a portion of the support I had received. The unconditional cash transfer had not only revived my businesses but also renewed my hope for a brighter future for my family.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
A job for my wife! Yes, receiving this money means realizing this dream. My spouse has been jobless because her job selling general products collapsed due to financial challenges. My intention now is to ensure this job is resumed to have a reliable source of income for my family. This will cost me utmost $300 to make it happen. On the other hand, I will also venture into poultry farming, a project that I consider to have a good market in our nearby town. The estimated cost for this plan is around $200. When I receive the second transfer, I will spend $200 to support my children in school and part of the remaining amount will boost my wife's business. Achieving this will mean a better livelihood and hence, this is basically what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a person with a passion for farming, I was able to take up the challenge of working on my farm since we received heavy rainfall this season. At the moment, my 2-acre piece of land is full of green maize. This has brought me happiness in life because I will soon have plenty of food in my household. Hence, this is what has put a smile on my face.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was once an agent of D-light company but because I did not have a smart phone, I was retrenched. This has rendered me jobless and idle at home. Since I have a family of 5, I find it a challenge to take care of them, and meeting our very basic needs has not been easy. My focus now has been on agroforestry but since I do not have customers, the seedlings have overgrown and this means a loss to me. The feeling of being jobless as a parent pains me most and I consider this as my biggest challenge.
