How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did a diploma course in nutrition and dietetics and I currently teach in a nearby school as a BOM teacher. I am planning to save part of my salary and later use it to pay for my examination fee so that I can be given a license of operation. With this, I will be able to search for a white color job that pays well. This is because I would love to support my spouse join college and continue with her studies since she was not able to proceed after sitting for her KCSE due to lack of school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by deciding to uplift the lives of the poor people in the society by giving financial aid. Because of this, people were able to achieve some of their goals according to their priorities in life. I do not see anything wrong with what GiveDirectly did and how they conducted themselves.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 16000 from my transfer on two three-seater seats and eight plastic chairs. I decided on this since I did not have enough seats after building a more spacious house. With the plastic chairs, I will not be worrying about catching up with a friend while outside since we will have something to sit on comfortably. Also, I spent KES 18000 on a solar panel, wet battery, and bulbs for the lighting purposes of my family and also paid for the labor of installing it. In addition, I used KES 7000 on the purchase of a calf that unfortunately died after some time and spent the remaining amount on food and clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at 8 am when I heard my phone vibrating loudly, I was a bit hesitant on checking my phone because I thought maybe it was a message from the service provider, at first I ignored the message due to the tight schedule that I had that day, at the break time I decided to check what the message was all about, I was so overjoyed to confirm that I had received the promised transfer from GiveDirectly, I immediately reach out to my wife and informed her of the good news that I had received, when I reached home that evening we all celebrated throughout the evening with endless touches of laughter. I am grateful to have received the support that brought so much joy and happiness to our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life is different now because I have managed to build a decent kitchen house for my family, I only had one house and this was not good for our health because of the smoke that came from the fireplace, I don't have a reliable source of income, therefore, we did not have a choice but to live in one house that we could afford then, I am so happy and thankful that I was able to build the kitchen house in a short period, I am also hopeful that I will be able to pay for the dairy cow that I had booked using my second transfer which would mean that I would no longer worry on the cost of purchasing milk, I am grateful that GiveDirectly has lifted my living standard to a better and a higher level in my society.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a trained teacher working in a local school within the village, I don't have a permanent job at the moment, because am still waiting for the government placement, I only depend on the little stipends, I am married with one child to fend for though my source of income is unreliable most of the time. When I received my transfer, I saw it as an opportunity for me to build a kitchen house in that I only had one house because I could to afford the second one due to financial constraints, therefore, I used KES 25,000 in building a decent kitchen house for my family, I then deposited a sum of KES 10,000 in buying a dairy cow so that my family would have milk, I am hopeful that I will be able to finish paying for the other instalment with my second transfer, I am grateful that GiveDIrectly gave me the unconditional transfer that improved my living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It means a lot. Yesterday when we were called for a baraza and told what GiveDirectly had for us, we were elated. I do not have a kitchen and so I cook in the main house. This is uncomfortable because of the smoke since I have a little baby. I plan to build a kitchen at a cost of 20,000 shillings so that I may reduce the smoke in the main house. We also buy milk at 1,500 shillings a litre per month which is costly. I plan to buy a cow at a cost of 32,000 shillings to help ease the burden of buying milk. I intend to build a sheep and chicken shed at 20,000 shillings and the remaining amount used to cater for food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is morning because I wake up and leave for school knowing my family has food to eat during the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is job security. I am currently a teacher but not employed fully and the money I earn is too little to cater for my family's needs with the rising cost of living.
