How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having my own dairy cows and goats has made my life to be so different in various ways. First I will be getting milk for free which will be for my family consumption, this will make them be healthier unlike before whereby they were malnutrition because they could not get enough proteins. Apart from that the remaining liters I will be supplying to my neighbors and the local markets and I believe this will improve my living standard. Before the coming of GiveDirectly, In used to buy milk from my neighbors which were costly and sometimes I could not afford it. With the goats, I will start a business of selling the offsprings once they mature and through that I will no longer struggle like before in paying school fees for my children. If it were not for GD coming to my life I would not have achieved all this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in so many sectors. First, the enrolment was very fair. There was no discrimination of any other kind. Provided you were in that village you could not be left out. Secondly, the enrolment was done free of charge, unlike some other organizations whereby one will be told to pay a certain amount of money for him or her to be enrolled. Another thing the officers were very humble and approachable just in case I needed any clarification they were ready to answer. It was my first time to see such an organization with some good services like GiveDirectly. I do not see any sector Givedirectly failed us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying six goats at KES 14500. It has been my long time dream but due to my low financial status, I could not afford it. I also bought two mattresses and a bed at KES 15000. Previously, I used to sleep on some old mats which I was not comfortable with. I was also being attacked by some bedbugs and this was affecting me healthwise. Later on, I cleared school fees for my daughter who is in secondary school. Previously, she was always being sent home to collect school fees and sometimes she could stay for weeks because of the poverty life. The remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household items.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I am now owning livestock which I did not have at first. In my life, I have never had any of them. Owning them now makes me feel proud of myself. I don't think I would have bought any of them were it not for Give Directly. The two cows and two goats are my biggest assets. Once they start reproducing, the young ones will come in handy in case I am faced with dire financial needs.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw the transfer notification early that morning. When I checked to confirm what the message was about, I realized it was from GiveDirectly. They had sent me my first transfer. I was overwhelmed with joy on receiving the good news. I was happy and shocked at the same time because I was not expecting to get it on that day.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 36000 of the transfer to buy two cows and two goats for rearing. My expectation is that this livestock will reproduce. This will enable me to meet my financial needs easily. To me, buying them was a good idea because they will multiply and increase in number. The young ones will help me in reaching my future goals. In addition to that, I also bought a new mattress at KES 5000 and replaced the old beddings that I was sleeping on. I also took KES 12000 to pay school fees for my child who was joining high school. I spent the remaining amount to buy daily foodstuffs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Owning livestock especially dairy cows and an oxen has been my longest desired dream that I have never achieved yet. With the arrival of GiveDirectly to our village, I find myself having the confidence of achieving this ambition. My plan is to spend utmost $300 to buy an oxen that will help me to upscale my farming. On the other hand, I will use an extra $300 to buy 2 dairy cows that I will depend on selling the milk and earn me income. I will spend part of the remaining amount to buy new beddings in order to replace the old ones. This will change my livelihood for the better.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually spend the better part of my day doing farm work in the morning and charcoal burning in the afternoon. Evening meets me when full exhausted but still, I find myself happy since I get ample time to rest from the busy day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity has ever been my biggest hardship. This is because I usually depend on subsistence farming but due to the lack of oxen to till my land on time and I always get low harvests. In some instances, I am forced to seek help from my neighbor, something that degrades my dignity.
