How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I currently want to establish a business raising livestock, mainly goats. I am aware that it will take some time because the money I make from my occasional work is not enough to accomplish anything right away, but I am confident that with hard effort and financial discipline, I can succeed. Even though I would love to start out with a cow, it won't be realistic because the revenue is unpredictable. As a result, investing in goats will be my initial investment, with the purchase of a cow coming later.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
A God-brought organization called GiveDirectly helped me achieve the impossible. Before the second transfer from GiveDirectly, I was residing in a dilapidated house with an iron sheet roof that was rusting and leaking. With the money, I was able to rebuild my home and construct a family toilet. Sincerely, I can tell that GiveDirectly is an organization that changes people's lives and revives faith in humanity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon getting the second transfer, I decided to renovate the roof of my house since the iron sheets were old, rusty and leaking during the rainy season. Therefore, I bought 16 pieces of iron sheets for $160 and also used $100 to pay the contractor. As I speak I am in the house and very happy about getting a new roof. This has seen my life-changing for the better. Again, living in a home that had no toilet was very shameful and unhygienic. Not only that I was tired of going to the bush for nature calls but also I could not withstand the shame of taking my visitors to a neighbor's toilet. Therefore, I decided to construct a pit latrine which is now complete and in use. I cannot state the exact amount used since I trusted my son to be in charge and he did exactly what I wanted. Thereafter, I opted to use the remaining amount for the family's upkeep because we had no food since we did not harvest any crops due to the scarcity of rainfall.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received a message I passed my phone to my granddaughter Vivian then she informed me that I have been sent ksh 55000 from Give directly. I felt relieved and happy since I never expected such a amount of mpesa and I heard a lot of pending bills so I was sure that I'll be able to settle them.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Life has really changed initially, I used to sleep hungry due to lack of food but since,I started receiving the transfer life really transformed because I normally receive money from the milk I sell daily . At the moment I'm leaving in a very decent house because I renovated my house from the transfer I received from give directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Previously, I was leaving in a dilapidated house. So the moment I received the transfer I used some of the money to purchase materials so that I can rebuild my house. As an old person with many of grandchildren who depend on me sometimes life becomes so difficult due to lack of milk and food to give them,i decide to buy one dairy cow so that I can use the milk from the cow to feed the family as well as sell them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My son who completed his secondary education 4 years ago could not join college because of lack of funds as I am a single mother of three with a burden of responsibilities. Receiving this money will mean taking him to college so that he can be a productive member of the society. I will spend 40000 KES on his education. The rest of the money will be spent on food and other basic needs at home. I believe through this aid money, food security at my home will be achieved.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I am with my family members at home especially the grandchildren, I always feel great as we always eat, narrate and share our past experiences with each other. During the last December holidays, we had a joint celebration at home and most of my family members came and we had great time together.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I was diagnosed with high blood pressure two years ago. This condition has been affecting my health to an extent of being unable to perform any house chores. I can not afford better health care at the moment as I only depend on my son who works as a casual labourer in Mombasa. Lack of enough money to provide for my family basic needs such as food is also a big challenge for me.
