Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy for receiving the transfer that I had been anticipated to change our life for the better. I vividly remember it was around 9 am when I was busy doing my daily household chores. I heard my neighbors celebrating in the village for receiving their transfers from GiveDirectly. My phone was charging in the neighbour's house and I stopped what I was doing and went to switch it on. Joy filled my heart when the Mpesa message pop up on the screen of my phone.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently living in a comfortable house with my family with proper bedding. Through the transfer, I was able to improve the condition of my shelter by putting up a new roof. Previously, the house had an old, rusty, leaking roof with one side blown away by strong winds. It was a great challenge especially during rain season since I was spending sleepless nights with my 2 small children. In addition, the kids were constantly feeling sick due to cold-related illnesses like coughing which took away my joy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have desired to improve the condition of my house by putting up a new roof but due to the poverty, this was uphill for me. This is because the one I had earlier was an old, rusty, leaking roof with one side blown away by strong winds. It was a great challenge especially during rain season since I was spending sleepless nights with my 2 small children. In addition, the kids were constantly feeling sick due to cold-related illnesses like coughing something that makes my life difficult. After receiving the transfer, I prioritized repairing the roof by purchasing 30 iron sheets, nails and paying labor charge. I also bought proper beddings for KES 16000 since the one I had was a small mattress that had worn out our years. Furthermore, I purchased 4 goats at KES 4000 each which is a long-term investment for my kids, I will be able to sell them when they multiply to educate them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security to me.I own small piece of land that brings 3bags of maize per season which is too little to serve my family until next season. When I get the transfer will use 60 thousand to buy my own land that I will use for cultivation.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is evening. This is because every morning I wake up to prepare breakfast for my family and start my work routine.in the evening I feel so happy when I see my children are well.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship in life is lack of employment.I have been jobless for several years, the work that i usually do is burning charcoal which brings little income to carter for my family.
