How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment we have four cows which are local breeds and the milk production hasn't increased even after we added more feeds and adopted modern ways of feeding livestock. We have these cows in zero grazing units but we do not get a high yield as expected. We intend to buy exotic breeds which are high yielding so that we can have more milk for sale. Our goal is to have at least one cow by end of this year. We are thinking of selling all that we have so that we can acquire a new breed that can give us a high yield.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly empowered us financially, they supported us with finance which enabled us to actualize our dreams. We had plans but we had no money.
According to me, I didn't see anything that GiveDirectly never did well. All that they did was transparent and there isn't anything to report.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before GiveDirectly came to our village, we had started construction of our new house made of bricks but the project had stopped due to lack of money. When we received our second transfer, we spent the whole amount on buying materials for completing the construction. We are so happy that we have a very good house that we have moved in. It would have taken us longer to save money for completing the construction but with the help of GiveDirectly, we completed it in good time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At the moment I received message confirming receipt of my first transfer,I was happy that the plans I had would now work out .I immediately called my husband to inform him about the good news and he was equally happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a chaff cutter is all I had wished for a long period. I am grateful to Givedirectly for this support that has brought a lot of changes in our household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receipt of my transfer, I spent KES 35,000 on obtaining a chaff cutter. I had been cutting nappier grass and other feeds for my dairy cows manually and hence it was cumbersome and time-consuming. Currently, I use the machine which has made it fast and reliable. With KES 8,000, I bought a young heifer which is an addition to my livestock and can provide us with milk in the future. I also bought three seats with cushions for KES 10,000 since I didn't have one. This has made my house very neat and I do not shy away from welcoming visitors to my house unlike before. With the remaining amount, I bought clothes for my children. I appreciate all the changes that I have seen in my house so far and I am looking forward to the second transfer so that I can do more.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a farmer and dairy farming has been my main source of income. Animal feeds have been a big challenge to me, with this money I will plan KES 30000 to buy a chuff cutter machine to enable me to convert maize stock into animal feeds and avoid a perennial shortage of animal feeds. This will also help me boost my milk production and earn more income for the family. This has been impossible for me since this machine is expensive and my family's income is not sufficient. Having this machine calls for the addition of another cow to maximize my farming and production of milk. I will then set KES 50000 to buy dairy cattle. To fulfill my dream of having poultry farming, I will use the remaining money to jumpstart this enterprise. This will bring success to me and my family. I will be happy now that we will not be struggling financially.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My enterprise of dairy farming is my source of joy and happiness. I usually sell five liters of milk daily earning me about KES 300 daily. This keeps me running and able to provide for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been facing financial challenges to support my family and scale up my dairy farming. I usually earn KES 300 daily from selling milk which is not enough for me. This makes me find myself in debt which is making me struggle a lot.
