How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the future, my focus is on expanding my goat-rearing project. I intend to increase the size of my herd, ensuring they receive the best care, nutrition, and healthcare to enhance their reproduction rates. This strategic expansion not only secures my family's financial future but also ensures a sustainable source of income in the long run. Additionally, I aim to enhance my farming endeavors. With hopes for an abundant water supply, I plan to venture into irrigation. My goal is to engage in vegetable farming, a high-demand market item, and alternate it with maize farming. I am optimistic that this will generate a good amount of income that will be crucial to supporting my children's education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am deeply appreciative of GD for their commitment to their promises; it delivered on every pledge they made. Receiving the full amount I was promised has made a significant difference in my life since it enabled me to cater for my children's education. Furthermore, I am genuinely relieved that the transfer is not a loan and there is no pressure to repay, which would have been a considerable burden for me. I am sincerely thankful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The recent transfer has been a lifeline for my family. With four children in school, the financial strain was becoming unbearable, especially with my spouse's low salary as a primary school teacher and the mounting educational expenses. The third transfer came as a ray of hope. We invested the money in our children's education. A substantial portion, $270, went into paying the university fees for two of our children, while $100 was used to cover the high school expenses for the other two. This was a significant relief for our family, as for the first time, our children did not face the threat of being sent home from school due to unpaid fees, allowing them to focus wholeheartedly on their studies. With the remaining funds, we invested in the future. We purchased two goats, considering their resilience in our arid climate. These goats not only adapt well but also reproduce rapidly, making them a valuable asset. I am confident that soon they will become a source of income for us, providing financial security in the face of our challenging circumstances.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am determined to work towards regaining a goat herd, knowing that their presence can contribute to our family's financial stability. The resilience and resourcefulness I've developed through previous challenges make me confident that I can achieve this goal. Expanding my farm is another aspiration that resonates deeply with me. By growing my farm and diversifying the crops I cultivate, I aim to generate additional income by selling the farm products. This expansion reflects my commitment to work towards greater financial independence and securing our future. Building a better house for our family is a priority born out of the desire for improved living conditions. The current iron sheet house is inadequate in terms of both space and health considerations. The support and opportunities provided by GiveDirectly have empowered me to make positive changes in our lives.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Paying for my daughter's school fees, especially as she enters her final year in form four, has been a huge achievement for us. This accomplishment resonates beyond our household, extending to our community as well. As a community, we share a collective sense of gratitude towards GiveDirectly. We recognize the positive change it has brought to our lives and how it has enabled us to overcome challenges that seemed impossible. Witnessing the positive outcomes, we extend our best wishes to GiveDirectly, hoping that they can continue with their work and extend their helping hand to others in need. Without the transfers, our achievements might have remained out of reach. Therefore, with gratitude in our hearts, we are determined to make the most of the opportunities we have been given and contribute positively to our community's growth.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The financial burden of school fees for my three children, two in secondary school and one on campus, weighed heavily on our family. Despite running a kiosk business, the income it generates is inadequate to cover these educational expenses, this led to a situation of great difficulty, where we even had to sell our goats to make ends meet. Our family was at a breaking point, facing challenges in meeting our basic needs and ensuring our children's education. The timely intervention of GiveDirectly brought a ray of hope into our lives. The transfers provided the means to address our immediate concerns and plan for a more secure future. School fees, totaling $400, were no longer an insurmountable obstacle, and this allowed our children to continue their education without disruption. Finally, the $5 allocated for food may seem small, but it has made a great difference in our lives. No longer burdened by the worry of affording meals, our health and well-being have improved. As a family of six, we had struggled to meet our basic needs, but the transfers have alleviated these challenges and granted us peace and stability. With gratitude in our hearts, we are now better equipped to work towards a better future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The transfers arrived exactly as expected after being discussed, and I was relieved to find that the school tuition arrears were currently being taken care of. Things have been tough financially for the last three years, which has impacted the dates for paying school fees, resulting in a large amount left out as a debt. We normally rely on agriculture to conduct our errands, but we have had insufficient rain, which has severely impacted our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since the time I bought adequate food for the house, my tiny business has been steadily running itself without many challenges, I have also managed to add more items to the shop because I could, and having a variety of goods and products makes us more marketable and known. As a family, we are looking different, with our faces beaming and our tummies full. All we would want to do is appreciate how far we have come and concentrate on our business to see it develop and sustain us. I am leasing farms from outside this dry area so I can do appropriate farming and make our home a better place to be without so many problems and pains. Our metamorphosis is real, and we can feel it deep inside us. We promise to sustain it here and beyond, from today onward.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having a family of six children, two of whom are at university and two of whom are in secondary school, has been one of the most exhausting experiences I've had. The amount of money required on the first day of school may drive anyone mad, and I am no different. My firstborn daughter, who is currently enrolled in university, graduated from secondary school with a massive amount of debt, making it extremely difficult for her to continue her education, and I would never want the same scenario for my other children. I was extremely impressed when I received the transfers, and instantly I cleared the debt in schools with $150. This felt so fantastic, and my children were excited about it. The whole term, they will be in school reading with the other children. I took $50 and used it to buy food for the house, and this has brought us enormous delight. We have a small business where we sell food commodities, and every time we would remove some portion of the stock to the house so we could cook, slowly our business was dwindling down. We are extremely grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling us to save the remaining part of the business by having enough goods in the house.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Quality education is what I desire for my children because that will make our lives better in the future. Three of my children are in secondary school while two are in university. Raising this school fee is a challenge and each academic year we are left with arrears. Currently, we need $1000 to be able to clear the arrears and am thankful to God for it will lift a heavy burden from us. Give directly transfers have indeed come at the right time when we needed most. My children's dreams will come to pass and they shall pursue their careers comfortably at the same time we will be left with no debts.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Five months ago, I started up a business at a nearby shopping center. Since then I can provide food for my family from the $3 profit I get. I am happy because my family has never lacked something to eat and school levies for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Paying school fees for our five children in secondary school and university has been an uphill task. My husband has taken up loans that we have not been able to repay for the past two years making us strain financially. If we had a stable source of income, we could have settled all the arrears.
