How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goal now, My main focus is to save some money from my small business of selling second-hand clothes. This is to enable me to fence my land and build a house. I am so happy because I had always wished to own land and GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill that dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in that it has enabled most people to invest in different income-generating projects. This was not easy before since there was no capital to start with. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had always wished to start an income-generating business but I did not have the capital. When I received the second transfer I decided to start a business selling second-hand clothes. I spent $180 on getting the stock, I am selling children's clothes and this has been giving me some income to meet my daily household basic needs and pay the school fees for my children. I am so happy because this was always my dream. I also make some clay pots and sell them at home and sometimes at the market I started this some years back, and I save the money that I get in merry go round group that we have started in the village. The group had given me some divided and I top up with part of the first transfer and $140 of the second transfer and purchased land. I lived with my parents and I had always wished to buy my own land and live separately with my children. Currently, I have land and I am planning on fencing and building a house. I spent $50 on purchasing goats, which reproduce twice per year, I will sell the young ones to pay the school fees for my children. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other basic household items that we were missing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 Pm I was preparing supper when I heard a message notification from my phone. I reluctantly check out since I did not expect any message from anyone. it was a message confirming that I have received some money from GiveDirectly. This was the highest amount of money I have ever received. I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to purchase a piece of land. My family members were so happy and we all celebrated. I went to withdraw the money the following day and started budgeting. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a piece of land. This had been my dream to fulfill. I depend on small casual jobs and making pots. I make five pots per day. One sells at 100 shillings. This has always been my source of income. Sometimes when there is no market it was challenging since I had no money to buy basic needs for my family. The money that I would get is so small and there were no savings. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and I decided to invest in purchasing land. Currently, I have started doing some plowing ready to start horticulture farming. I will get enough food after harvest to feed my family. The surplus I will sell to earn an income to pay school fees for the children and meet additional basic needs. GiveDirectly has enabled me to achieve what has been my dream and I am so grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 50,000 on purchasing a piece of land. This was my priority since I live with my parents and I have always wished to own my land. farming is my passion but the challenge is that I did not have land. currently, I have started to farming and in the next few months, I will get enough food to feed my children. I spent the rest of the money on food and household items that I was lacking at that particular time. GiveDirectly enabled me to fulfilled my dream of owning land. This could have taken quite some time since I did not have a continuous source of income.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means venturing into the business. It has been my ambition to start small business of selling second hand clothes as my source of income and I am passionate about it. I have been doing bench mark from different people who does the same business and I feel motivated to start one. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 30000 as my starting capital and I foresee that my income will increase and even meet my household needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a potter, I have made a good network of buyers and my income has improved. With the little money I make from the sales I save some and purchase food for my family. This has brought joy and happiness into my life since my children have not stayed without food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is food insecurity. Currently we are experiencing food prices inflation and yet we do not have a stable source of income. My source of income has been pottery and with the increased rainfall, it takes a while for a pot to dry up thus delaying the time of sale. Rainfall is a blessing however, with my type of work it can be disadvantaging.
