How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the year to come, I would wish to purchase a parcel of land. With this, I would have sufficient land for farming. I believe that with proper management of goat farming I can easily reach my goals once they multiply. I am so happy that the organization was an eye-opener for greater things.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
First of all, the support from GiveDirectly uplifted our lives amazingly, it uplifted the lives of the neediest people in our village. The impact that the organization left in our village is well evident, people built houses and others educated their children. The organization did wonderful work and in all the places that they have worked in around our areas; we did not witness any irregularities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a motorcycle taxi rider married and blessed with four children. Upon the receipt of my second transfer, I opted to use my transfer on starting a goat-rearing project where I bought six goats worth $200. This is because I knew that the goat is drought resistant and easy to manage compared to other animals. I was not in a position to start one before due to financial constraints due to school fees, responsibilities and other basic needs. Secondly, I thought of completing my incomplete house where I used $120 on its completion. Lastly, I bought foodstuffs for my family with the remaining amount. I have achieved a lot within a short period. The support from GiveDirectly has been of great help thus, I am grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Before GiveDirectly came into our lives, I had two small houses where I would use one as a kitchen and sleeping room for my teenage sons and daughters. I was so stressed to see them live in the same room as I couldn't afford to buy building materials for building another house for my sons. When I got my first transfer, I was so excited as I knew that my plans would be fulfilled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I had no other source of income apart from wages from casual jobs. Whenever I got some money, I would prioritize food and left with none for buying building materials for constructing a good house. I am happy now that my children got a better house and we have expanded ours. We enjoy more spacious rooms and good shelter. That's the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My priority was to build a house for my sons and expand that which I had. I spent a total of KES 32000 on buying materials for constructing a new house and expanding that which I had. I am glad that now we have a spacious room in our home as well as a separate house for my sons.
The remaining amount, I spent on paying school fees for my child and buying some food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better living standard for my family. In our culture, teenage boys are supposed to live in a separate house away from their homestead. Having a house of their own gives them privacy and also a comfortable environment for their studies. Unfortunately, we have never managed to build a house for our son due to the financial challenges we are facing. I am planning to use about KES15,000 of the transfer on purchasing building materials and paying labor charges. I am delighted to receive this transfer since it will help me mitigate the worries that I have been having regarding the social well-being of my son.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The peace and harmony we have with my spouse are what give me joy. Being happy and having an understanding spouse give me strength as the head of the household not to fail in my family responsibilities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge we are facing currently is financial constraints. We do subsistence farming as our main source of livelihood to sustain our family of 6. Unluckily, subsistence farming has turned out to be unreliable in our area due to the effects of climate change; extreme weather conditions. As a parent, I am worried that a time might come when we shall have no food (due to crop destruction) in our household.
