How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to raise sufficient cash that will facilitate my daughter's high school journey which kicked off recently. Being the only child who got the chance and privilege to go to school, I pray to God to help her finish her studies without any distractions. Also, I trust that once she graduates and grabs a good job, she will change the story of our household together with that of her generation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a very great job in my entire village and this is evident from the huge transformations among the households. The idea of giving out unconditional cash transfers stood out because one had to utilize the cash according to the desires of their heart. Therefore I do not see anything that requires changes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a portion of my second cash transfer on buying six goats. I have desired to own them but I could not afford them because they were quite expensive. I however settled for them because they can thrive so well in my region( semiarid). Additionally, they require minimal supervision meaning look after them as well as perform my daily duties. I hope that once they increase in number, I can sell some and pay fees for my daughter who recently joined form one. Additionally, I cleared fees arrears of $200 for my daughter and I am glad she won't be sent home for the whole academic year. The little that I will be earning from my casual jobs will be for other household needs which is a relief. With the remaining cash bought food which took us almost three months.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had just woken up preparing for my daily household activities like fetching water for the family. I remember it was around 6 am when I heard my phone ringing. Being uneducated, I took the phone to my daughter-in-law who checked it and informed me that it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy since I was very sure that finally, I will be able to fulfill my long-term goal of owning a decent shelter.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a modern iron-roofed house like others in the village is the biggest difference in my life. Currently, I no longer need to worry about where to get the grasses to renovate my leaking roof. Furthermore, I am enjoying my nights on proper bedding unlike before when I used to feel body pain after sleep.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my recent transfer to purchase building materials for the construction of a new house. This is because I was living in a grass thatched one that leaked during the rainy season. Additionally, it is hard to get the grasses for renovation due to the persist drought conditions in our area. Most of the people had moved from the grass-roofed house to modern iron-roofed ones. I spent KES 28,000 to construct a one-roomed house for myself. Furthermore, I used KES 3000 to support my kid's education by clearing the fee arrears. Moreover, I used KES 9,500 to purchase proper bedding since I was using the traditional bed which was not comfortable. Lastly, I cleared a debt of KES 14000 at the food store where I had been taking foodstuffs on credit.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of two members. We are all living in a one bedroom house and it leaks during rains season. It has no space to accommodate visitors and also my daughter who is schooling can not do her studies at night. During rains season, My daughter and I have sleepless nights due to the rains. I will build a two bedroom house, buy two beds and two mattresses. This will cost KES 90000. I will also use KES 20000 to buy five goats as investment. It will help me pat school fees for my daughter when she joins secondary school next year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My elder sister who was married at Kavunzoni village has a daughter who has been sick for the last six years. She dropped out of school when she was in class seven. Last year 2022, she got a good Samaritan who took her to hospital at Mombasa and she got medication. She is now well and next term she will resume her classes. The recovery of sisters daughter has brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The current challenge I am facing is lack of house. The house I own is small and not spacious for the family. My daughter has been punished by her teachers every morning because she does not do her home work every day. She has no place to do her studies at home. My relatives have not visited me for so long because I have house to accommodate them.
