How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For the coming year and beyond, I have set my sights on expanding my poultry business. With the positive results and increased income I have experienced so far, I am motivated to further develop this venture. I plan to invest in more poultry, expand my customer base, and explore new markets to maximize the business's potential. By increasing the scale of operations, I aim to enhance my earnings and achieve greater financial stability for myself and my family. In addition to expanding the poultry business, I have a personal goal of enrolling in a commercial driving course. This course will provide me with the necessary skills and qualifications to become a professional driver. I see this as an opportunity to broaden my career prospects and open up new avenues for income generation. By acquiring a commercial driving license, I can explore opportunities in the transport sector, which may offer more stable and profitable employment options.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
From my perspective, I believe that GiveDirectly is implementing an effective approach by directly transferring the funds into our Mpesa accounts. This method ensures that the money reaches the intended recipients without the risk of it falling into the wrong hands. By utilizing the Mpesa platform, GD has created a secure and reliable means of delivering financial assistance to individuals and families in need. I have not noticed anything that the organization is not doing well or any that it should improve.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $300 of the recent transfer to settle a debt that I had borrowed from a friend. This was important as it allowed me to combine it with the previous transfer, enabling me to purchase a motorcycle. This acquisition was necessary to facilitate my poultry business, where I source poultry from the village and sell them in town. Previously, transportation was a challenge as I had no means of transport, resulting in me having to walk and carry the poultry myself. However, with the motorcycle, transportation became much easier, enabling me to increase my supply and consequently rising my income. I am relieved that the loan has now been fully settled, and I no longer have to use my daily earnings to clear it. With the remaining amount, I decided to invest in maize farming. This involved purchasing essential inputs and covering the labor costs for planting. My primary objective for this investment was to ensure a sustainable source of food for both myself and my younger brother, with whom I share a living arrangement. By cultivating maize, we aim to secure an adequate supply of food, improving our nutritional well-being and reducing the risk of hunger.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I want to start my own chicken business before the end of the year so I can stop buying in the villages and start raising chickens on my own farm. I can increase my income in this way and properly manage it at home. If all goes according to plan, I'll start out by purchasing roughly ten goats so I can comfortably take care of my family's basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Being trusted enough with unconditional cash to manage it myself was a very inspirational move made by Give Directly. A lot of us have had the confidence to do business however small to support our families.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was delighted to receive my second transfer from Give Directly, which was  Ksh 45,000. As this was the highest sum of money I had ever held in my hands at once, I had to be vigilant. I added ksh 15000 that I had previously saved to ksh 45000 and spent ksh 65000 on a second-hand motorcycle since I've been having trouble with my business because it requires a lot of commuting. I typically use public transportation, which is highly expensive, unreliable, and time-consuming, to the market after purchasing chickens from farmers in Kimalel and Koriama villages.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received my cash transfer while at the market selling chicken. This is my usual business. It was during this day as I was going about my business, I heard my phone ring and vibrate. On viewing, I realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overcome with happiness at such support that changes our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am content and happy that I was able to boost my business. This has been the greatest disparity between now and then before receiving the cash transfers. My business has significantly improved because I have seen an increase in the profit margin. This wasn't possible before due to low revenue. I feel happy to have received the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My heart has desired to start a poultry business. This proved a challenge before due to financial constraints. It's usually expensive to transport the chicken to the market especially since I live by myself, with no one to help me. Upon receiving my cash transfer, I spent $140 on buying building materials to set up a poultry house. I also spent an extra $50 to boost my existing business to gain more returns. I feel the cash transfer has uplifted a heavy burden off my shoulder and thus very grateful.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I want to live a good life in the future and that is only possible with good education and financial independence. When I completed my high school education two years ago, I was not able to proceed to college because my parents were unable to raise my school fees. To achieve my dream of pursuing a mining and exploration course, I must save up money. This is challenging because I depend on casual jobs and chicken selling to make ends meet. Sometimes, I hardly save any amount in a month as a result, I foresee staying two more years before joining college. Receiving this money, therefore means I will fulfill my ambition sooner than I had expected. I am so delighted to see my life change after enrolling back in school. I will use all the transfers to pay for my tuition fees and other school levies like accommodation and food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My brother introduced me to a chicken business five months ago, and this changed my way of living because I earn $15 profit weekly. When I started, I could earn $5 after selling ten chickens but currently, I sell thirty. I am happy with it, and the money I get I use to buy food and save for my college education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I completed my high school education two years ago but unfortunately could not proceed to further my education due to a lack of school fees. I then resorted to doing casual jobs and raising chickens to earn a living and save up for my college fees. I have only saved a quarter of what I need to join the school because casual jobs are unreliable. This affects my plans because it will take me another two years to be able to get the $ 600 required to start pursuing a course in mines and exploration. If I had enough money I would have gone back to school as soon as possible, therefore, financial constraints is the biggest challenge.
