How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to start a secondhand business and employ someone while I continue with my teaching job. If I can save $200 in 2023, I would start the business and this would help out whenever I need to buy my monthly medicine.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly visiting us at our home with the scorching sun shows that they care about us. Calling for meetings and educating us on how well we can use the money and lastly sending us money directly to our account shows that the organization thought of a well-planned idea. I am grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work as a teacher in the village. When I started my career I had just graduated with a certificate in teaching. After a few years, I saved some money and enrolled in a school for my Diploma. Things were great
until I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. During GiveDirectly enrollment I was sick I could not walk and I was enrolled in bed. I remember that day clearly. During that time I could not afford to buy medicine nor go for follow-up checkups this had deteriorated my health. I was vomiting, and I had lost so much weight that I thought I would die. Then I received this money and checked into the hospital and after a while, I got better and went back home. I used the first transfer of $530 for medical purposes. With the second transfer, I used to repay some loans that had accumulated while in the hospital and paid school fees. After a while, I got back to work and with my salary, I am trying my best to ration it to take care of everyone in the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
GD-2050992
I was at home in the morning as I finished brushing my teeth and walked to where I had left my phone the night before. Immediately I had a message tone and I read the message. I was in tears of joy because it was a miracle for me to have received the cash transfer. I was excited to share the news with my husband and children.it was a day that I will never forget.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My biggest challenge is my health status, which limits me from working, and being married to a polygamous man has not been easy in terms of financial provision. I was worried that my son, who was a candidate, would have to wait for his elder brother to complete high school in order for him to join. The difference is that I find it hard to believe that both of them are in school for the rest of the term. I hope the funds will buy me more time to recover from my operation and resume back to my duty as an ECDE teacher.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had my uterus removed through an operation late last year. I have been having frequent checkups and tests done on a weekly basis. The clinic is quite a distance because I am using my husband’s health insurance coverage. My husband, who is a teacher, is polygamous and has been struggling to support two families. He hardly has enough to take home as his salary is deducted from the loans he has taken the past years. I spent KES 2000 on transport to and from the clinic and bought food for KES 2000 for my family of eight children. The remaining KES 50,000 was spent on my two children who are in secondary school. One of them was joining the secondary school, and the other is in form 2.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm blessed with nine children and am married to a polygamous family, I work as a ECD teacher at a local nursery, and my spouse is a teacher.
Sadly I was experiencing unusual bleeding like monthly periods for August to December, and Been in and out of hospital because doctors didn't find my disease, luckily I visited Kilifi District hospital and did scanning and diagnosed with Fibroids.
I was so heartbroken because at that time I didn't have any source of income, and my husband left me for other wife.
Through well wishers they contributed and I had a successful surgery, only that I need to go to clinics after two weeks and I cannot afford all the transport costs and medication.
Upon receiving the cash transfer it will assist me to plan for my medications and help me to meet my family needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I went for operation in January I was in a very bad condition, everyone knew I wouldn't survive, but here I am very strong, I thank God.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
At the moment I am still sick, after the operation and I cannot work so getting my basic needs and supporting my children is a big hustle.
My children need school fees when they open schools, and I have a daughter who is doing her form four this year, and another who is awaiting to join form one and I don't if I will be able to educate them.
