How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My newest goal at the moment is for me to be able to build a decent house for my young family. I plan to execute the plan by saving part of my daily income from the motorcycle business. I am so happy that the transfer was an eye-opener for great things to come.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done a good job of empowering less fortunate people by giving out unconditional transfers without expecting anything in return. Throughout my interactions with the GiveDirectly staff, I did not encounter any irregularities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon the receipt of my second transfer, I decided to use it in purchasing a motorcycle. This is because I knew that I would be able to employ myself. I am married and blessed with three children. I, therefore, used both my transfers on purchasing a motorcycle. I was unable to purchase one before due to financial constraints because I used to rent a bike daily. I am forever grateful for the funds that lifted my living standards tremendously.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the evening and I was busy constructing our house when suddenly my wife came holding my phone which I had left charging in the house on her hand and telling me that the transfer had been sent. I could not believe what she was saying and hence I took the phone and I checked the SMS for myself. I was so happy when I saw that we had indeed received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. We celebrated together and we thanked God and GiveDirectly for blessing us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. The food costs that we usually incur have been reduced since we no longer buy milk a lot and maize. This is because we managed to buy a cow and we bought three bags of maize that is going to sustain us for a while. We also bought water containers which we plan to use in storing rainwater and use during the dry season. We always experience a big challenge getting water for use during the dry season. We hence usually buy it where one container goes by KES 50. Apart from the above, we are glad that we now have new clothes that we can wear when we want to travel somewhere.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 21000 of the recent transfer on buying a cow. We decided to buy the cow because we didn't have a source of milk. We hence use to buy milk where we could buy a liter every day for KES 60. We were not able to buy a cow before because we didn't have enough money. I am a mason while my wife is a small-scale farmer where she usually grows crops such as tomatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, and she sells them to make some money. The money that we make most of it usually goes to the purchase of food, that is, maize and milk. Apart from the cow, we also bought three bags of maize for KES 4000 per bag for our consumption and rice. We also bought six water containers at KES 200 per container. With the remaining amount of the transfer, we used it in buying clothes for ourselves and our child. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for supporting us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a carpenter and commutation to my work has been my big challenge. This forces me to look for means of transportation which is costly, this has a ripple effect on my daily income. Upon receiving this money, I will plan KES 50000 to buy a second-hand motorbike to ease my commutation and cut on transport costs. I am the sole breadwinner of the family, therefore all that I earn daily from my casual job about KES 500 per day goes to the family's basic needs. This makes it hard to do savings and buy my bike. I will also consider buying a piece of land with KES 30000. With the remaining money, I will use it to clear my dowry arrears.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I managed to build my family a better Kitchen in the last six months with my little saving. This brought me happiness now that we do not struggle anymore with a leaking roof when it rains.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The piece of land that I am living on is small, this does not give me enough space to carry on with farming and rearing livestock. Therefore, I end up spending more on buying animal feeds.
