How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a goal of raising livestock because I have been a subsistence farmer for a considerable amount of time. In addition to the three goats I already own from the previous transfer, I want to purchase additional. The reason for this is that I wish to invest in livestock after discovering that goats are inexpensive to maintain and have a ready market. By doing this, I will have a reliable source of income because goats are easily exchangeable for money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my perspective, GiveDirectly succeeds admirably by providing financial support. I am always content and delighted when I consider what I have accomplished. If I hadn't been given the option to decide how to spend the money, I would not have done these things. On the other side, there was nothing about GiveDirectly that I felt could have been done more effectively. Everything was carried out well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After using part of the first transfer to start construction of a house which went halfway, I eagerly waited for the second transfer to complete. Upon getting the second transfer, I spent $300 of the transfer to complete the house. I bought some construction materials as well as paid the contractor. As of now, I am happy because the house is complete and I dwell in a nice house than before. Apart from that, I bought a bed and a mattress for $120. I took this initiative because the bed I was using had broken. For the remaining amount, I bought some food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Illiteracy was almost delaying my happiness. I cannot remember whether I heard the message tone or not. What I know is that as I reached home from the shamba, I heard neighbors happily saying that they had received their transfer. Since we were registered on the same day, I became curious and contacted my helper. The helper confirmed that I had also received my transfer. I was very happy like a bride because, at my old age of 63 years, I did not expect to get a huge sum of money like $550 which I did not receive when I was young and stable.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The house and hunger fulfillment are the two key changes brought on by the GiveDirectly transfer. At first, our family would go up to three days a week without eating. Charcoal burning, which was unstable, was the main source of our revenue. We currently have access to food thanks to GiveDirectly. In addition, we previously slept in a home with poor security. We had no choice but to cross our fingers and sleep uncomfortably in the house while it collapsed. I was able to build a decent home that is safe to sleep in thanks to the transfer. If not for GiveDirectly, none of these would have been able to occur anytime soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the cash transfer, my priority was constructing a more spacious house than the one I had as it was small and congested. Before, building a house was difficult given that I mostly depended on charcoal making, and the little money I earned could not even enable me to get some food on regular basis. Courtesy of the transfers, I spent $218 to build a bigger one-room mud-waaled house with an iron sheet roof. After that, I opted to build a house because I did not have a decent house. The house I had was very small, congested, and collapsing thus it was unsafe to dwell in. Thereafter, I bought a sack of maize for $62 so that I could have food security at home while concentrating on other things. Since I desired to rare some livestock, I used $110 to buy three goats. For the remaining amount, I saved for my upkeep.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am an aged woman who deserves dignity and respect. Currently don't feel that the respect I get from the community match my age. This is because I live in a one-room house with a grass roof and so main openings on the walls. People can see me from afar when I am in the house. During the rainy season, I spend sleepless nights because the house is leaking. I will build a two-room house with an iron sheet roof. The house will have 24 pieces of iron sheets at a cost of $240. Labour and other building materials will cost $ 400. I will also use $ 300 to buy 10 goats as an investment. This will help me and my son in the future in case of an emergency.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son works as a gatekeeper at Shangweni primary school. He had problems getting his salary at the end of the month such that he accumulated debt for five months. At the end of October 2022, he was given all his money which amounted to $ 250. The money brought happiness to me because he bought two bags of flour each 90kg at a cost of $ 120. The food will last for eight months. I am happy that I am now taking three meals a day unlike before.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am an aged mother of one. I do charcoal burning as my only source of income. I have done this job for the last ten years. It is very tedious and has caused me healthy issues for me. My chest has developed pains for the last five months now. In a month , I sell only two bags of charcoal getting an income of $6. This only caters for food. My son works as a gatekeeper at one of the primary schools around here. He earns $ 50 per month. He sometimes helps me buy food for the family. The challenge is a reliable source of income in my family.
