How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I don't have major goals this year and next years to come other than educating my children. I believe they are my investment right now because I believe an educated child is an empowered child. Seeing them excelling and graduating from collage means that they have a bright future ahead of them and they will later come back to change my life and give back to the society.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
If it were not for the transfers, my children and many more in the village will never have had a chance to proceed with their high school studies. Therefore, what GiveDirectly does well is empowering the society through the cash transfers. Another thing that I liked about GiveDirectly is their independence. I loved how you worked independently without involving local leaders. That made the whole process fair and free of corruption.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
By the time I was receiving my second transfer, my son who is in high school had been sent home due to fees arrear that he had accumulated over the previous term. Therefore, I spend $200 to clear the arrears and he was able to go back to school. The reason as to why I was not able to clear the fees arrears owes to the fact that, I am a gardener in a school where one of my children schools. With a salary of $95, I only receives $70 every month and the balance goes towards paying school fees. Being the sole provider of the family with five of my other children in school, I cannot manage to cater all the expenses and sometimes the children end up accumulating huge fees arrears. I spend the balance to build a semi permanent mud walled one bedroom house for three of my teenage boys whom had been staying with us in our two bedroom house. Although they were not comfortable staying with us because they were grown enough to have their own privacy, I wasn't able to build them a house due to financial incapability and this was the perfect time to do so.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can vividly recall that the moment I received my transfer, It was early in the morning. I had just woken up when I saw a Mpesa message on my phone showing that I had received money from Segovia technologies. This was the best news that came my way that early morning, I was overwhelmed with happiness, and I then broke the good news to my wife who was overjoyed and grateful. We then embarked on planning how we would cash out our transfers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life today is that I was able to clear the school fees arrears of my son, meaning that he can comfortably concentrate on his studies without any disturbances. Secondly, I was able to purchase a dairy cow hence I will be able to reduce the cost of buying milk daily. I am happy and grateful for the support that lifted my living standards amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly was timely, This is because it came at the right time of need. I had enrolled my son on a secondary school but the school fees were halfway. Things were tough because I depend on farming and the cattle business where I am a middleman. What I earn is not enough to sustain my family's needs due to the school fees responsibilities. Thus I used KES 42,000 to buy a dairy cow to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily, Additionally, I used KES 5000 on school fees. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes. I am glad that I have achieved so much in a short period.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer will really relieve me from stress. Currently I pay school fees for my two secondary school continuing children. The total fees for a year is KES 70,000 which I find it a heavy task especially in the current political season in Kenya. I feel much overburdened and probably the transfer will ease my heavy task.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The recently announced Kenya Certificate of Primary Education results brought me joy and happiness. My child scored 317 out of 500 marks. It is my happiness and again my worry because I now have no money to enable her join Secondary School level. I am just hopeful that I will qualify to receive Give Directly's support.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I buy maize for domestic use. I harvested 1 bag in January 2022 but it got exhausted just after one and half months because of my large family of six members. Yesterday my family had to forgo one meal. I am worried the situation might even lead to my children dropping out of school when it reopens.
