How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My husband worked as security before and he applied for another job but unfortunately was turned down because he did not have the license to prove to be a driver and so our goal was to save enough money so that we would have enough to help him join driving school so that he could get a better job opportunity.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I have no complaints when it comes to GiveDirectly because fortunately it served me and my family well especially since the festive season is coming. I feel more comfortable because we would have a reason to celebrate. We also managed to enroll my husband to school and achieve one of his dreams and for that I am very grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After I received the money as family we decided to pay for the driving college for my husband so that he would get the license and stand the chance of getting another job. Therefore we paid KES 20,000 for the driving school. I saved KES 10,000 for any future emergency. Then I wanted to renovate the shed where I kept the goats since they had no roof over them which made them get rained on when it poured so I bought iron sheets so that they would at least have cover which cost me KES 8,000. I also paid school fees for my child who is still kindergarten for that term in order to avoid any debts which cost me KES 3,000. I also sought to take care of the nutrition for the family and I bought maize at KES 3,200, twenty five kilograms of rice at KES 2,200, ten litres of cooking oil at KES 1,100 an some sugar, salt and tea leaves. As for what was left I used it to but clothes for my two children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes past 9 am when my mother inlaw called and informed me that she had received her transfer from GiveDirectly and on hearing this, I rushed inside the house to get my phone. Upon powering it on, I was so overjoyed to confirm that I had also received the promised transfer and I immediately reached out to my spouse and informed him of the good news that I had received. We all celebrated throughout the day with endless touches of laughter. I am grateful to have received the support that brought so much joy and happiness to our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I now have a dairy cow and due to this, I have been able to cut down on the daily cost of milk as I no longer buy them. This has enabled me to save up some money which is a very big relief and achievement on my side. Also, my children have enough milk for consumption and I believe that their health will improve with time. GiveDirectly is indeed a blessing from above as everything went on smoothly as we had planned and I am grateful for the support that lifted my life and gave me so much joy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been buying milk for our daily consumption for a very long time. This is very expensive for us due to unreliable sources of income and my family is sometimes forced to take tea without milk. When I received my first transfer, I decided to use it in buying a dairy cow and its calf worth KES 40,000. I also used KES 6,500 in buying a Nafsac pump so that I can be using it to spray my livestock instead of taking them to the cattle dip. I am glad and grateful to God since the milk problem has been solved in my household. Using the remaining KES 8000, I bought some food to last my family for some time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Being without a cow in our culture is something that makes one feel incomplete. I have had a desire to own one but due to financial constraints, this has remained just but a dream. The situation has made me lose a lot of money in buying milk for my 2 young children every single morning. I spend KES 100 to buy 2litres of this precious commodity daily, translating to KES 3000 each month. Receiving this money will be a big sigh of relief to me as I will buy a lactating cow of around KES 30000. Out of it, I am certain of getting 5-6litres of milk per day, therefore saving me the cost of buying.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day. This is so because it is at this time that I get to spend some time with my 6 year old son who goes to school during the day. Helping him with his homework is something that I enjoy doing.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to the dry nature of this area, we keep goats and sheep because these are the only animals that do well in such a condition. Last year I had a flock of 30 sheep but unfortunately, I lost it all to Anthrax disease. Imagine the devastation that this made me go through considering that this was my main source of livelihood. At the moment I live in fear that the ones I bought thereafter might die of the same disease.
