How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Comparing my current life and how it was before receiving the transfers, I can attest to the fact that there are a lot of differences - most of which are positive. The new houses, livestock and improved farming are clear testimonies of what has been happening after receiving the transfers. All these would not have happened if I had never received this money. I am one of the grateful people around and always praying for GiveDirectly to reach out to other regions so that people's lives may change.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did amazing work in our village. Since we started receiving the first transfer, no one has ever talked ill of felt bad about the whole program. All I have been hearing are praises from the villagers who were really overjoyed on receiving the full package which they were promised. We have been able to construct new houses, bought livestock and also improved our subsistence farming a reason enough to keep thanking God for making this happen through GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Receiving the second transfer brought great joy and new hope in our household since we had already planned on how we'll be spending it. We had a house construction which was going on since we received the first transfer. We were still left to complete the plastering of the floors and also fixing the panes on the windows. This second transfer came just at the right time to serve the purpose thou' we have been hindered by the continuous rain. The plan to plaster the floors still holds and we decided to save the money until the rain subsides to allow us to ferry the construction materials from the shopping center.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
For a long time, I had dreamt of improving my small poultry project to make a better living. When I got my first transfers from GiveDirectly, I decided to invest some amount on poultry. I am optimistic that I will be collecting more eggs. I expect to get better returns as one egg sells at KES15. I am not only reaping from the sale of eggs but also the chicken wastes that I am using in my kitchen garden where I grow kales, spinach, onions from which I enjoy fresh and nutritious vegetables. With an already lucrative prospect of this project, I plan to invest more in other incoming generating activities that will boost my income.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes to 6 am when I received a message notification on my phone. Since I was awake, I decided to check and know its contents. To my surprise, I realized that GiveDirectly had sent us the promised money. I became so happy as I knew that I would be able to fulfill my dreams.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I earn a living from subsistence framing I practice in my small piece of land. I prefer livestock farming to crop farming since it gives me a daily income, unlike crop farming that takes months to mature. When I received my transfer, I took some amount to buy a dairy cow. I settled on this as a way of expanding my dairy project. Expanding this project had always been my dream to boost milk production. Also, I bought some improved Kienyeji chicken as a way of expanding my poultry project. I spent some amount to buy some poles that I will use in my fencing my compound. The remaining amount, I used on buying decent clothes, beddings, and other household items to add to what we had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always wanted to fence my compound with barbed wire and wire mesh in order to restrict my poultry and cattle from destroying my neighbour's crops, something that has seen us quarrel day in day out. Receiving this money will therefore help me fence my compound thus earning back my respect. I also intend to add more chicken to my farm in order to boost the income i usually generate from selling poultry products
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually spend my mornings in the farm by sometimes weeding vegetables, harvesting or tilling the garden until afternoon when i head back home to do household chores. I am usually happy in the evening when all the activities i had scheduled for the day are all done since its the time to get rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
After graduating from college in the year 2011, securing a job has been the greatest challenge i have faced. My parents sold most of their livestock and land to educate me having in mind that i will be able to support them once i get a job but this has not been the case. I now depend on my spouse who is a primary school teacher to provide my needs as well as the needs of my parents, something that has made us lag behind in terms of progress since we have not been able to save money for future developments.
