How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I got a great relieve when I cleared school fees for my child who was sitting for final exams. I was so stressed on how to clear the school fees, but I thank God who made a way through GiveDirectly's transfers. I got a peace of mind and focused on farming to put food on the table for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did very well by keeping thier promise, when they had promised us that every registered household would receive KES 110000 I couldn't believe but at last they fulfilled. What was so different about GiveDirectly is sending the money to each via mobile money.
To me, there was nothing which wasn't done well by GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Paying school fees for my children was a big struggle for me and when I got my second transfers, I spent a total amount of KES 25000 on paying for school fees arrears and clearing end of year fees which were required for my child to sit for exams.
The remaining amount, I spent KES 6000 on buying a goat, kes 7000 on buying maize for food consumption at home and kes 15000 on buying clothes and shoes for all my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was preparing lunch at 1pm when I heard the message beep on my phone. I was very excited when I learnt that it was the transfers we had been waiting for and when I told my children, they were very happy well. The next morning I went to withdraw the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference I have seen was that my house now looks more presentable now that I bought seats and I look forward to moving into the one that I am building since it is bigger. Thank you GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer means that I will be able to cater for the school fees of my five kids. I have one who is in secondary school while the others are in primary level. I will use 20,000 shillings for the one in secondary level while another 20,000 shillings for the others combined. Additionally, I will use 30,000 shillings to build a house for family since the one I have has been infested with mites and also water seeps from the surface due to the nature of the soil in this area(clay soil). I will then equip the house with some furnitures for 5,000 shillings. Finally, I will buy and install a water tank for 20,000 shillings to help supply me with water for domestic use during the dry season.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After I am done with my usual household chores, I head to the farm to carryout some farm activities e.g transplanting, planting, weeding etc. I then go back home with some green vegetables for my family to take for supper. My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I get to relax while I account for the day's successes.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I depend on subsistence farming to fend for my family. I mostly grow maize, beans and kales on my family. The production of these crops has been largely hampered by prolonged drought and pests and diseases. The former being the main cause. This is because, I get low to zero harvest because of this. This for me is the biggest hardship I have ever faced.
