How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My income barely meets my family's daily needs, therefore, life has been challenging especially seeing my child on and off in school due to overdue areas . With GiveDirectly's transfers, I have been able to pay school fees on time and settled all the arrears . This on other hand has given me happiness and peace seeing them attend school consistently .Secondly , I now keep four goats in my homestead to the courtesy of GiveDirectly . To me its a saving for the future of my young children's education. I know once they reproduce and increase in number, I will be able to sell and help me out of rising financial problems.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion , GiveDirectly did an awesome work by giving money in my community to the poor which uplifted our livelihood . Personally . I have gotten a privileged to live in a spacious house after extension that I only saw as a dream before . I do not have any critic on GiveDirectly's operations .
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the lager part of my second transfer to buy building materials such as iron sheets , timbers, nails and paid labors who facilitated the extension of my house . I have bigger a house which accommodates my family well .The remaining amount I bought two goats , hopefully in the foreseen future, I shall sell some of its offspring to cater for emergencies that might present itself.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life that I can proudly mention is that I now have a permanent house. My previous house was grass-thatched and leaking. Some of my children were sleeping at their uncles house, it reached a time my children were like a burden to them. Apart from that, I used to keep some of my house property under a tree because there was no space in the house. This was really insecure because some were always stolen including some utensils. The coming of GiveDirectly has transformed my life because I really can't tell what could happen in the future. I am so happy and ambitious now because all is settled, we are sleeping under a big an iron-roofed house which is well plastered.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It almost 3 am when I heard my phone vibrating continuously. I decided to check what the message was all about. I realized that the money that had been promised by GiveDirectly had hit in my M-Pesa account. I was sure now that the dreams I always had would finally be achieved with the help of the transfer. I was so happy.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets and building poles. This was for the purpose of the construction of a new house because the previous one was very small and in a poor condition. I then bought some goats as my assets, this, for example, my children had been sent home to collect school fees, I can be able to sell one and clear the fees arrears. I then cleared school fees for my children because some were at school because of the huge fee balances. I then bought some enough foodstuffs for my family because some of my children were malnourished.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Education for my children is my first priority and this I plan to achieve by settling some of the debts that have accumulated in the school. I will also invest in assets such as livestock that can be used later to meet any financial requirements for their education. Lastly, I will build a bigger house for my family because the one we live in now is too tiny for my family of eight members.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is my happiest part of my day because I am able to rest after my daily duties engaging in different casual jobs such as washing people's clothes or fetching them water.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hurdle has been shortage of finances to support my children's education. One of the adverse cases was my second born daughter Hadija who completed primary but could not transition to secondary school for lack of fees. She later got pregnant and now has two children aged 4 and 2. Luckily, she got an opportunity to join secondary school last year but after one year we yet again were unable to pay for her fees. She is now in a hopeless state wondering if her thirst for education will ever be quenched.
