How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I aim to complete the construction of our house by the year's end, ensuring my family's comfort and security in a decent home. Given my high blood pressure, which limits my activities at home, achieving this will be a significant accomplishment for me this year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has been a beacon of hope, instilling determination and joy in the lives of villagers here. The direct cash transfer approach has reshaped our views on money, and despite the program's limited duration, its positive impact is evident. Beneficiaries are more content, children are thriving academically, improved and safer housing structures have been established, and above all, a variety of business ventures, from modest to substantial, have sprouted.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my second transfer from Give Directly, I was elated and eager to complete the projects I initiated with my initial transfer, including constructing a permanent home for my family of seven. Being a solo parent, ensuring my family has enough to eat while also covering other expenses has always been challenging. So, being able to secure food and construct a home has been nothing short of a dream realized for both me and my loved ones. I used the entire amount of $530 to build and buy other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While enjoying the company of my grandchild who had come to visit me during the December holiday, a message popped into my phone at around 4 pm. I did not hesitate to check, but before I could take the phone from the table where I had placed it, my grandchild picked it up and read the message to me. My face brightened with the good news. It was the first transfer of $550. My heart was filled with joy and thanksgiving since I thought it was just a formality of registration but the ones to be assisted were already known; it was not the case. Involuntarily, the mood of the stories we had with the grandchild changed and we became happier than before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As an aged peasant farmer, I solely depended on selling some water at $0.05 per 20-liter bucket which could not sustain my basic needs. I turned on selling water because I have a freshwater tap at my home and I could no longer manage the farming exercise due to age. Currently, I am humbled and happy because, since the time I got the transfer I have managed to start construction which will see me in a safer house unlike before and I have never gone without food. This could not be the case if it were not for GiveDirectly's transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to sell some water for a living. A 20-liter bucket goes for $0.05. This source of income could not enable me to fix my collapsing house till it reached a state where it could not be repaired anymore. When I withdrew the money, the priority was to construct a house since the one I had was full of cracks and collapsing thus unsafe to dwell in. Therefore, I bought 19 pieces of iron sheets for $126, building blocks for $290, and 6kg of roofing nails for $18. I aim to construct a two-room permanent house made of blocks. The contractors are already on the site and if all conditions remain constant, the house will be ready in the next two months from now. I am very happy for the aid because I will soon have a nice looking safe house compared to where I dwell currently. For the remaining amount, I used it to buy some food for upkeep.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My husband died three years ago and left behind a family of two. I have been suffering from pressure and diabetes for five years now. This has made me indoors and depend entirely on my son who works as a casual laborer at Mombasa. He earns approximately $100 per month which caters to my health and food. I live in a two room house with a mud wall. This year on early March, one of the walls collapsed due to heavy rain. Since then it has not been renovated due to lack of funds. It really affects my health as wind and water get into the house. I will use $600 to build a two room house with iron roof. I will also use $ 200 and $300 to cater for my medication and buy six goats as an investment respectively. The rest will help me buy food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son works as a casual laborer and since covid-19, he has been staying at home without any job. Early this year 2023, he got a job at Mombasa and earned approximately $200. That money brought happiness to me and the family because I could get food before taking my medicine unlike before.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been suffering from pressure and diabetes for five years now. This has really affected my health such that I cannot work anymore and depend on my son for survival. I have spent a lot of money for my medication and am now broke with no money even to buy food. That is the challenge I am passing through.
