How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had hoped to start a poultry farm, but financial constraints have hindered me from doing so. I currently have three chickens for which I intend to build a good coop, and I hope to eventually bring in more of both for egg production and to sell whenever there is a financial need.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Since the first transfer, a lot has changed in my life and the lives of my family. I appreciate GiveDirectly's unexpected move to provide us with free cash transfers. We had never received such financial support before, and it significantly alleviated our poverty and changed many of the things we were struggling with. We are grateful and hope that the organization will continue to do great things in other villages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My two sons used to look for a place to sleep in the neighborhood, and they would occasionally fail, forcing them to share a small space that we had been using at home as a store. When I received the second transfer, I purchased construction materials such as 20 iron sheets for $8 each, frames and windows for $15, and labor for $40. I'm glad their house is finished and they are sleeping well in their own room now. I also purchased a heifer calf from a relative who required $60 at the time, which I had to pay with the remaining funds. The remainder was spent on food for my family of ten. I had been relying on subsistence farming and the sale of farm produce to pay my bills, but there is currently a devastating drought that has destroyed most of our crops.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so much happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. The money came at around 10:00 pm when we were about to retire to bed and we both heard our phone ring. My husband and I were so elated to finally receive the money from GiveDirectly. I knew then that GiveDirectly did not lie to us when they made a promise that they will send the money to our Mpesa accounts. I got myself ready to implement the things that we already had in mind.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the house that I built for my children. I am so happy knowing that my three boys will ni longer have to go to the neighbourhood for sleep over each and every night. This has not only brought so much joy to us as a family but has also restored the dignity that comes with being a responsible parent. We are one big and happier family than we were before receiving payments from GiveDirectly
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 25000 to buy a television set and used the remaining amount to build a house for my children and to buy food for family too. I chose to buy a Television set for our family so that we may be able to be updated in what is happening in the outside world and so as to make sure also that we have something that reduces stress levels for us at home. With this I had my husband in mind who after being diagnosed with diabetes would often get stressed up and hence required something that will keep him busy. As for the house that we built for our children, this was meant to help out three boys have a place where they can sleep and rid them if the stress of having to go sleep over a neighbours house. The room woukd also accord them enough space and privacy to pursue their education and move towards achieving better results.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My wish has always been to own an additional dairy cow so that once it ceases to produce milk, we can have an alternative source of milk for income generation but unfortunately, finances have been insufficient. All the income I earn from the sales of farm produces ( sweet potatoes and vegetables) caters for household food as well as school fees for my children. When I receive these transfers I intend to use KES 60000 to purchase an exotic dairy cow exclusive for milk production. I will be glad that my family of 9 will be food secure as they will have a constant supply of milk and the surplus to earn income. I will use the rest of the transfers to pay college fees for my son who completed grade 12 in April 2022.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since my family of 9 depends on farming to earn a living, we always wish for adequate rains and a lack of diseases. I was please when my area received rain for most of the days since January 2022, an instance that made my sweet potatoes thrive. I am currently harvesting and I am hopefully hoping to earn income from the sale and hence be financially stable.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is a challenge I am currently facing. My family of 9 depends on sweet potato farming for a living. However, this crop takes 5 months to mature thence in between those months I cultivate vegetables. The income generated is insufficient to cater for all the family needs. It depresses me most of the times as I always do not know what tomorrow holds.
