How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have a new goal now. My main focus is to plant more Napier grass for my dairy cow that I have bought using the second transfer. I wish to invest in this in that it will get milk in the next few months when it reproduces. This will enable me to cut the daily cost of buying milk which is so costly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well in that they do their training so well and this enabled most of the people who received the transfer to spend it well. This improves their standard of living since most of them started income-generating businesses. Some invested in dairy-keeping projects and build better houses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 on purchasing a heifer. This has always been my wish and I am so happy because I have fulfilled it. I always spend KES 100 on buying milk. This is so costly in that I do not have a stable source of income. I depend on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I would get through this is so small. Sometimes my children would go without milk whenever I do not have the money. Owning a heifer has brought hope to our lives in that when it reproduces in the next few months we will get enough milk. I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. I will save the money that I would have to spend on milk for other household basic needs. I have devoted much of my time to this daily keeping project and I wish to improve it to the next level. I gave out KES 5,000 as church tithes for the construction of the church building. Besides that, I paid KES 5,000 as school fees for my children school fees. They are now studying well without being disturbed. The remaining amount of money I spend on food and household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was on Thursday early morning and I had just woken up. I heard my message ring tone and upon checking it was an Mpesa message from Givedirectly. I thanked God and we all celebrated the good news.I was so excited since all the plans I had would commence immediately.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the construction of the chicken coop which will allow me rear chicken. It will allow me sell eggs and cater for most basic needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the first KES 16000 I used in building a chicken coop.I had been doing small scale but because of few eggs I could earn less money. With this plan of building a chicken coop will be able to create a better space and more chicken hence more income. I also spent KES 6000 in purchasing chicken for starting up the business. The outcome of selling the egss will allow me sort house bills. With KES 9500 I used in buying three sacs of maize which will sustain us upto the next harvest.I also spent KES 6000 in clearing school fees arrears for my two nieces I stay with.I had also thou2of buying a good breed of sheep and since the prices were abit hight I saved KES 15,000 as I wait for prices to drop so that I can purchase for domestic purposes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am passionate about chicken farming because I feel it is not only easy to manage but also its products have a ready market. It is a source of pride and it makes me feel more of a woman than when I have none. I had a flock of 30 chickens but last year it was wiped out by a strange disease and this left me devastated. I have a desire to start it off all over again with 15 chicken at a cost of KES 500 each. I also intend to have a spacious structure constructed at a cost of KES 7500. Receiving this money will help me revive my poultry farming and this will be an additional source of income for me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I harvested 3sacks of maize from 0.25-acre piece of land. This has saved me the cost of buying maize flour and this is one thing that has since made me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have 2 nephews and a niece under my care and raising their school fees is not a walk in the park for me. It pains me a lot every time they are sent home for school fees. My husband works as a caretaker in a rental estate in Chebunyo Market and his monthly salary is KES 7500 every month. This is not enough to exhaustively pay for their school fees because we are required to pay KES 21000 every term. As we speak we owe the school arrears amounting to KES 12000. I feel that the burden is going to be heavier because two of these children are set to join high school in May this year.
