How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I will sell heifers I will sell some I will remain with some.
My new goal is to put up a posho mill so that I would generate income through the business. Ugali is stable food here and people always need flour and that guarantees market. I will sell some livestock so that I can raise money for buying the machine for making flour.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Some of us had no hopes of realizing our dreams but GiveDirectly empowered us to make them a reality. The finances which we received were a reasonable amount which was enough to cater to our goals and that's what GiveDirectly did well.
On the other hand, I didn't realize anything that wasn't done well as their operation was so transparent.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I love farming and the support which I got from GiveDirectly came in handy with my plans. It enabled me to add more livestock and build structures to accommodate them. I spent KES 40000 on buying two cows which they have now reproduced. I then spent KES 5000 on buying them chickens and another KES 5000 on buying a sheep. The remaining amount of KES 3000, I spent on buying building materials for constructing a poultry house. I am glad that GiveDirectly empowered my farming and I am so happy for the support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I heard my phone ringing, I had travelled to Nakuru town for an errand, I was so happy and excited when I saw a message that I had received the promised transfer from GiveDirectly, I knew that I will be able to accomplish the desires of my heart of owning a dairy cow. This was the best news in a long time and I am grateful for it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received my transfer is evident, The cow that I bought was in calf, It gave birth this morning and I can proudly say that I have 2 cows now, I no longer worry about buying milk from my neighbours which is so expensive especially in a dry season, I now have enough milk for my consumption, I will also be able to sell some so that I would earn an extra income from it. I am happy and contented that I was able to buy a dairy cow that would produce milk for my daily use, in addition to that I also started a poultry project and I am hopeful that this too would pick up

What does receiving this money mean to you?
To me, receiving this money means a chance for a better life. I have had a dream to buy a cow after selling the two I had five years ago to take care of my father's medication but I couldn't due to scarce resources. I am a masonry earning KES600 a day when I get some work and this isn't enough to take care of my personal basic needs and support my siblings. I believe having one again will mean an increase in my assets and I will rely on it for milk for my household consumption and sales to make an extra income thus I am planning to buy a cow worth KES30000 to start with. I wish to spend KES40000 to build an iron-roofed house and fully furnished. When I complete it I will be ready to marry and this will be my happiness since I will have a place to call home and share the comfort with my family. I am planning to invest KES20000 to invest in poultry farming since with egg production I will be able to meet my daily household needs thus save my earning for other incoming generating activities. I am planning to spend KES20000 on my personal basic needs mainly food and clothing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day. This is the time I am done with my daily chores, I have gotten some money that can enable me to have something to take home for my daily meals and relax to wait for the next day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the year 2017, I was just out of my college when my father got a chronic disease hence we spend our family resources in his medication leaving us with none to rely on. He later on passed on meaning I took over his responsibilities as a first born in my family and since then I have had to work extra hard doing different casual jobs to make sure my siblings get their daily meals and other basic needs. My father's dead was my biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life.
